It peaked at #45 on the Billboard 200. Its initial release was on vinyl, cassette tape, reel-to-reel tape, and 8-track tape cartridge. Although its follow-up Time Fades Away was finally released on CD in August 2017, Journey Through the Past remains the only 1970s Neil Young album yet to see an official CD reissue. (en)

Soldier è l'unico vero inedito, che ritroviamo nell'antologia Decade, è un brano curioso perché registrato tra la confusione di una segheria. Il disco è considerato trascurabile nella discografia younghiana, per via sia della scelta antologica di brani quasi sempre poco significativi o in una versione da scarto di session, sia per lo scarso livello delle esecuzioni dal vivo.
