Februar 1826 in Washington, D.C.) war ein US-amerikanischer Politiker (Demokratisch-Republikanische Partei), der den Bundesstaat South Carolina im US-Senat vertrat. John Gaillard kam im heutigen Berkeley County zur Welt. Er wurde in England als Jurist ausgebildet und kehrte dann nach Amerika zurück. Von 1794 bis 1796 übte er als Abgeordneter im Repräsentantenhaus von South Carolina sein erstes politisches Mandat aus; unmittelbar danach wechselte er in den Staatssenat, wo er bis 1804 verblieb. Dort fungierte er ab 1803 als Präsident der Kammer. Nach dem Rücktritt von US-Senator Pierce Butler wurde Gaillard zu dessen Nachfolger im Kongress gewählt. Er trat sein Mandat am 6. Dezember 1804 an und blieb nach mehrmaliger Wiederwahl bis zu seinem Tod am 26. Februar 1826 Senator. Dabei war er dreimal Präsident pro tempore des Senats: vom 28. Februar bis zum 11. Dezember 1810, vom 25. November 1814 bis zum 5. Januar 1819 und letztmals vom 25. Januar 1820 bis zum 4. Dezember 1825. Nach dem Tod von US-Vizepräsident Elbridge Gerry fiel ihm vom 25. November 1814 bis zum 4. März 1817 auch die Funktion des kommissarischen Vizepräsidenten zu. Er wäre damit im Eventualfall Nachfolger von US-Präsident James Madison gewesen. He was elected to the United States Senate in place of Pierce Butler, who resigned, and served from December 6, 1804, until his death in Washington, D.C. on February 26, 1826. During his tenure, Gaillard voted for the War of 1812. He served as President pro tempore of the Senate during part of the 11th Congress and at least part of every Congress from the 13th to the 18th. He was also first in the presidential line of succession from November 25, 1814, two days after the death of Vice President Elbridge Gerry, to March 4, 1817. He was the longest-serving Senator in U.S. history at the time of his death. In his memoir Thirty Years' View, Thomas H. Benton, one of Gaillard's contemporaries, described him thus: Urbane in his manners, amiable in temper, scrupulously impartial, uniting absolute firmness of purpose with the greatest gentleness of manners—such were the qualifications which commended him to the presidency of the senate. There was probably not an instance of disorder or a disagreeable scene in the chamber during his long-continued presidency. He classed democratically, but was as much the favorite of one side of the house as of the other, and that in the high party times of the war with Great Britain, which so much exasperated party spirit. Gaillard died in Washington, D.C. on 26 February 1826 and was interred in the Congressional Cemetery. (en)
