La filo de kantoro jam en la aĝo de sep jaroj iĝis membro de la reĝa kortegokapelo Saksona, tiam direktata Heinrich Schütz, kiu esence influis la verkado de Schelle. Ekde 1657 ĝis lia mutacio en la jaro 1665 li estis kantisto en la duka ĥoro de Wolfenbüttel. From 1657 to 1664 on Schütz's recommendation he was a singer in Wolfenbüttel. He was the cantor of the Thomanerchor, Leipzig, from 1677 to 1701.In 1689/90 he collaborated on a cycle of chorale cantatas with Leipzig theologian . (en)
