- Jochen Gerz (* 4. April 1940 in Berlin) ist ein deutscher Konzeptkünstler, der sein Leben zum großen Teil in Frankreich (1966 bis 2007) verbracht hat. Sein Werk dreht sich um das Verhältnis von Kunst und Leben, Geschichte und Erinnerung, um Begriffe wie Kultur, Gesellschaft, öffentlicher Raum, Partizipation und öffentliche Autorschaft. Nach literarischen Anfängen arbeitet Gerz in verschiedenen künstlerischen Disziplinen und mit unterschiedlichen Medien. Gleich ob es sich dabei um Text, Fotografie, Video, Künstlerbuch, Installation, Performance oder seine Autorenprojekte und -prozesse im öffentlichen Raum handelt, im Zentrum der Arbeit steht die Suche nach einer Kunstform als Beitrag zur res publica und zur Demokratie. Whether he works with text, photography, video, artist books, installation, performance, or on public authorship pieces and processes, at the heart of Gerz's practice is the search for an art form that can contribute to the res publica and to democracy. Ses travaux ne relèvent jamais d'une seule discipline artistique. Ils doivent d'abord être compris comme des œuvres in-situ où sont utilisés différents médias : écriture, photographie, vidéo, installation, mais également performance. Ses anti-monuments et son œuvre sur la mémoire l’ont fait connaître au-delà du milieu de l’art. (fr)
