- Joan Daemen (* 1965) ist ein belgischer Kryptologe, der an der Entwicklung wichtiger kryptographischer Verfahren beteiligt war. Zusammen mit Vincent Rijmen entwickelte er die Blockchiffre Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), zusammen mit Guido Bertoni, Michaël Peeters und Gilles Van Assche die kryptologische Hashfunktion SHA-3. Unter anderem entwickelte er auch 3-Way. Daemen machte 1988 seinen Abschluss an der Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Dort begann er seine Promotion als Mitglied der Forschungsgruppe COSIC (Computer Security and Industrial Cryptography) und schloss sie 1995 ab. Nachdem er die Universität verließ, arbeitete er für Janssen Pharmaceutica, BACOB, Banksys, Proton World und STMicroelectronics. Er veröffentlichte regelmäßig Arbeiten auf dem Gebiet der Kryptographie. Oft arbeitete er zusammen mit seinem ehemaligen COSIC-Kollegen Vincent Rijmen. - Joan Daemen (Dutch pronunciation: [joːˈɑn ˈdaːmə(n)]; born 1965) is a Belgian cryptographer who co-designed with Vincent Rijmen the Rijndael cipher, which was selected as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) in 2001. More recently, he co-designed the Keccak cryptographic hash, which was selected as the new SHA-3 hash by NIST in October 2012. He has also designed or co-designed the MMB, Square, SHARK, NOEKEON, 3-Way, and BaseKing block ciphers. In 2017 he won the Levchin Prize for Real World Cryptography "for the development of AES and SHA3". He describes his development of encryption algorithms as creating the bricks which are needed to build the secure foundations online. In 1988, Daemen graduated in electro-mechanical engineering at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He subsequently joined the COSIC research group, and has worked on the design and cryptanalysis of block ciphers, stream ciphers and cryptographic hash functions. Daemen completed his PhD in 1995, at which point he worked for a year at Janssen Pharmaceutica in Beerse, Belgium. He subsequently worked at the BACOB bank, Banksys, and then STMicroelectronics. - Joan Daemen ( Achel, 1965 ) is een Belgisch cryptograaf en samen met Vincent Rijmen de ontwerper van Rijndael, het Advanced Encryption Standard AES. Hij heeft ook talrijke andere versleutelingalgoritmen ontworpen en mee ontworpen onder andere MMB, Square, SHARK, Noekeon, Subterranean en het 3-Way blok-vercijferingsalgoritme. In 1988 is hij afgestudeerd als burgerlijk elektrotechnisch-werktuigkundig ingenieur aan de KU Leuven. Hierna vervoegde hij zich bij de COSIC onderzoeksgroep onder leiding van prof. Rene Govaerts. Hier werkte hij aan het ontwerp en de cryptanalyse van blok vercijferingsalgoritmen en cryptografische hash-functies. Daemen legde zijn proefschrift af in 1995 en behaalde daarmee de graad van Doctor in de Toegepaste Wetenschappen aan de KU Leuven. Hij werkte toen voor Janssen Pharmaceutica in Beerse. Daarna had hij posities bij BACOB, Banksys en vervolgens bij Proton World. Sinds 2015 is hij hoogleraar Symmetrische Cryptologie aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. (nl)
