- A jackup rig or a self-elevating unit is a type of mobile platform that consists of a buoyant hull fitted with a number of movable legs, capable of raising its hull over the surface of the sea. The buoyant hull enables transportation of the unit and all attached machinery to a desired location. Once on location the hull is raised to the required elevation above the sea surface supported by the sea bed. The legs of such units may be designed to penetrate the sea bed, may be fitted with enlarged sections or footings, or may be attached to a bottom mat. Generally jackup rigs are not self-propelled and rely on tugs or heavy lift ships for transportation. Jackup platforms are almost exclusively used as exploratory oil and gas drilling platforms and as offshore and wind farm service platforms. Jackup rigs can either be triangular in shape with three legs or square in shape with four legs. Jackup platforms have been the most popular and numerous of various mobile types in existence. The total number of jackup drilling rigs in operation numbered about 540 at the end of 2013. The tallest jackup rig built to date is the Noble Lloyd Noble, completed in 2016 with legs 214 metres (702 feet) tall. (en)

Nogi platformy mogą być podnoszone i opuszczane za pomocą hydraulicznych tłoków lub silników obracających koła zębate, zazębione w listwach zębatych, będących częścią nóg. Dolne końce nóg mają konstrukcję zmniejszającą zapadanie się nóg w gruncie. Nogi wykonuje się w postaci rur albo kratownic. Wiertnia najczęściej znajduje się na wysuwanej podstawie, dzięki czemu platforma może stanąć obok istniejącej platformy stałej i wiercić w odwiertach (studniach) mających zakończenie w obrębie platformy stałej. Niektóre platformy mają własny napęd, pozwalający przemieszczać się samodzielnie, lecz zdecydowana większość nie ma napędu i jest przemieszczana za pomocą holowników lub (na większe odległości) na statkach półzanurzalnych. Zaletami platform samopodnośnych są duża mobilność i stabilność oraz możliwość wiercenia nad platformami stałymi. Wadami są ograniczenia głębokości wody. Platforma Noble Lloyd Noble, zbudowana w 2016, jest (w 2020) największą platformą samopodnośną. Nogi o długości 214 metrów pozwalają na pracę w wodzie o głębokości 150 metrów, przy czym platforma, dla uniknięcia uszkodzenia przez fale, znajduje się na wysokości 69 metrów nad powierzchnią wody. Een hefplatform is over het algemeen driehoekig of rechthoekig en heeft afhankelijk van de vorm drie of meer poten. Door deze poten is het mogelijk om het platform te laten staan op de zeebodem tot dieptes van ongeveer 120 meter. Dit type platform wordt vaak gebruikt als een mobiele buitengaatse booreenheid (mobile offshore drilling unit, MODU) of gecombineerd boor- en productieplatform.
