- في 4 ديسمبر 2011، أعلن الجيش الإيراني إنزال طائرة طائرة آر كيو-170 الأمريكية، التي تجاوزت الحدود الإيرانية. وتقول طهران بانها اُنزلت باستخدام وسائل الحرب الالكترونية فيما أعلن البنتاغون بأنّ الطائرة تعطلت ثم تحطمت بعد إسقاطها. ولكن بعد عدة أيام ظهرت طائرة آر كيو-170 أمام وسائل الإعلام الإيرانية الرسمية، وهي كانت شبه سالمة. وبعد سنتين اعلنت إيران بأن خبرائها استطاعوا صنع طائرة شبيه من ناحية التصميم بطائرة آر كيو-170 الأمريكية. - El 4 de diciembre de 2011, un vehículo aéreo no tripulado Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel estadounidense fue capturado por fuerzas militares iraníes cerca de la ciudad de Kashmar en el nororiente de Irán. El gobierno iraní anunció que el vehículo no tripulado había sido derribado por su unidad de guerra informática, la que logró tomar el control del aparato y lo hizo aterrizar en forma segura, después que informes periodísticos occidentales iniciales indicaran incorrectamente que habría sido derribado. El gobierno de Estados Unidos dice que el aparato habría tenido problemas de funcionamiento y que se había estrellado, aunque posteriormente el aparato fue mostrado en la televisión iraní sin ningún daño aparente. - On 5 December 2011, an American Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was captured by Iranian forces near the city of Kashmar in northeastern Iran. The Iranian government announced that the UAV was brought down by its cyberwarfare unit which commandeered the aircraft and safely landed it, after initial reports from Western news sources disputedly claimed that it had been "shot down". The United States government initially denied the claims but later President Obama acknowledged that the downed aircraft was a US drone. Iran filed a complaint to the UN over the airspace violation. Obama asked Iran to return the drone. Iran is said to have produced drones based on the captured RQ-170 including the Shahed 171 Simorgh and Shahed Saegheh. (en)

Le gouvernement iranien a annoncé que le drone avait été piraté par son unité de cyberguerre qui l'avait reprogrammé et l'avait fait atterrir en toute sécurité, après que des rapports initiaux provenant de sources d'information occidentales auraient contesté qu'il avait été "abattu". Le gouvernement des États-Unis a initialement nié ces affirmations, mais plus tard le président Obama a reconnu que l'avion capturé était un drone américain. L'Iran a porté une plainte à l'ONU pour violation de son espace aérien. Obama a demandé à l'Iran de rendre le drone.
