- Illumos (stylized as illumos) is a partly free and open-source Unix operating system. It is based on OpenSolaris, which was based on System V Release 4 (SVR4) and the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD). Illumos comprises a kernel, device drivers, system libraries, and utility software for system administration. This core is now the base for many different open-sourced , in a similar way in which the Linux kernel is used in different Linux distributions. The maintainers write illumos in lowercase since some computer fonts do not clearly distinguish a lowercase L from an uppercase i: Il (see homoglyph). The project name is a combination of words illuminare from Latin for to light and OS for Operating System. (en)
- Illumos es un proyecto de software libre derivado de OpenSolaris. Fue anunciado por conferencia web desde Nueva York el 3 de agosto de 2010. El nombre del proyecto es un neologismo procedente del latín "Illum" (la luz) y de "OS" (operating system, sistema operativo). Se trata del código base a partir del cual cualquiera podrá crear su propia distribución de software basada en el sistema operativo OpenSolaris. Pero Illumos no era una distribución, ni una bifurcación (fork), en la medida que no pretendía separarse del tronco principal, sino un derivado de la "consolidación" OS/Net (más conocida como ON), que consiste básicamente en el código fuente del núcleo (SunOS), los controladores, los servicios de red, las bibliotecas del sistema y los comandos básicos del sistema operativo. La iniciativa partió de algunos ingenieros principales de Solaris, como Garrett D'Amore (responsable del proyecto, y actualmente en Nexenta) y Anil Gulecha (ingeniero de BeleniX). - ILLUMOS est un projet de système d'exploitation libre s'appuyant au départ sur le noyau dit OS/Net (connu comme ON) réalisé dans le cadre du projet OpenSolaris. Le projet Illumos a été annoncé le 3 août 2010. Le nom du projet est un composé du latin « Illum » (la lumière) et de OS operating system (système d'exploitation). Depuis l'annonce de la création du projet, l'entreprise Oracle Corporation (qui a acquis la propriété de Sun Microsystems) a fait connaître courant août 2010, dans un courrier interne, la politique qu'elle entendait suivre pour OpenSolaris. Les orientations ainsi prises conduisent de facto à un arrêt du projet OpenSolaris.
