- The Hollister riot, also known as the Hollister Invasion, was an event that occurred at the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA)-sanctioned Gypsy Tour motorcycle rally in Hollister, California, from July 3 to 6, 1947. Many more motorcyclists than expected flooded the small town to watch the annual rallies, as well as to socialize and drink. A few of the motorcyclists caused a commotion in the town. The incident, known afterwards as the Hollister riot, was sensationalized by the press with reports of bikers "taking over the town" and "pandemonium" in Hollister. The strongest dramatization of the event was a photo of a drunken man sitting on a motorcycle, possibly staged by the photographer by surrounding the scene with discarded beer bottles. It was published in Life magazine and it brought national attention and negative opinion to the event. The Hollister riot helped to give rise to the outlaw biker image. (en)
- Les émeutes de Hollister se produisirent lors du rassemblement moto Gypsy Tour de l'American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) à Hollister (Californie) du 3 au 6 juillet 1947 aux États-Unis. Beaucoup plus de motards que ce qui était prévu envahirent la petite ville pour regarder les rallyes annuels, se rencontrer et boire. Quelques motards hors de contrôle causèrent une certaine agitation dans la ville, bien qu'à la fin de l'événement les dégâts furent finalement considérés comme mineurs. L'incident, connu par la suite aux États-Unis comme le Hollister Riot, fut dramatisé par la presse, avec des articles dénonçant des motards « prenant le contrôle de la ville » et faisant du « tohu-bohu » dans Hollister . Le plus fort de cette dramatisation fut une mise en scène de la photo d'un homme ivre, assis sur une moto entouré de bouteilles de bière jonchant le sol. Cette photo publiée dans Life magazine eut une portée nationale et donna un éclairage négatif à l'événement. L'émeute de Hollister a participé à la naissance de l'image des bikers. (fr)
- De Hollister Bash is een legendarische vechtpartij in 1947 tussen motorrijders. Deze vechtpartij vond plaats tijdens een door de AMA in Hollister (Californië) op 4 juli 1947 (Independence day) georganiseerd motortreffen waarbij een aantal zich misdroegen. Dit werd in elk geval gemeld in het tijdschrift Life van 21 juli 1947, waarbij het verhaal nogal werd overdreven. In feite was er vrijwel niets gebeurd in Hollister, al deden de in scène gezette foto's van woest uitziende motorrijders anders vermoeden. De Hollister bash stond model voor de cultfilm The Wild One met Marlon Brando uit 1953. Door de Hollister bash en de opkomst van de Hells Angels kreeg het imago van motorrijders in de Verenigde Staten een deuk, waarbij de film nog eens als katalysator werkte. De film droeg ook alle ingrediënten voor het ontstaan van de Britse Rockers. Korte leren jassen en Engelse motorfietsen werden het handelsmerk van deze groep. Marlon Brando reed in zijn rol van Johnny Strabler op een Triumph Thunderbird 6T uit 1950. (nl)
