- Highlander II: The Quickening is a 1991 science fiction film directed by Russell Mulcahy and starring Christopher Lambert, Virginia Madsen, Michael Ironside and Sean Connery. It is the second installment in the Highlander film series, and sequel of the 1986 fantasy film Highlander. Set in the year 2024, the plot concerns Connor MacLeod, who regains his youth and immortal abilities and must free Earth from the Shield, an artificial ozone layer that has fallen under the control of a corrupt corporation. The film was shot almost entirely in Argentina before and after the country's economy crashed; as the local economy experienced hyperinflation, the film's investors and completion bond company took direct control of production and final edit, removing director Mulcahy and his creative influence while changing parts of the story. The resulting film contradicts the established canon of Highlander, in depicting immortals as aliens, featuring the inexplicable resurrection of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, and altering the concept of the "Quickening". It received universally negative reviews from critics and fans of the series, with many considering it to be one of the worst films ever made. It was universally panned for its retcons, large plot holes, poorly developed characters, confusing story structure, an abundance of subplots, and bad editing. The original theatrical edition was released on 12 April 1991 in the United Kingdom (in an eight-minute longer cut) and 1 November 1991 in the United States, and was also a box-office bomb grossing $16 million in the US on a production budget of $34 million. In 1995, an alternate director's cut called the Renegade Version was released to home video that attempted to address the many story problems, such as removing all mention of Zeist and the idea that immortals are aliens. This was followed by a Special Edition DVD release in 2004, which was largely the same cut as the Renegade Version but with some altered special effects. The sequel Highlander III: The Sorcerer follows the events of the first film, in the process contradicting and completely ignoring the events and revelations of Highlander II. (en)

- Highlander II - Il ritorno (Highlander II - The Quickening) è un film del 1991 diretto da Russell Mulcahy e interpretato da Christopher Lambert, Virginia Madsen, Sean Connery e Michael Ironside, sequel autonomo di Highlander - L'ultimo immortale (1986). La sceneggiatura, scritta da Peter Bellwood ed ispirata alla storia inventata dai produttori Brian Clemens e William Panzer, prosegue le vicende dell'immortale scozzese Connor MacLeod, impegnato questa volta a sventare i piani di una spietata multinazionale e del malvagio generale Katana, il dittatore di Zeist, luogo d'origine degli immortali. La produzione ebbe varie difficoltà. Il regista Mulcahy, contrario alla sceneggiatura, ebbe ripetute discussioni animate con i produttori. Le spese per la realizzazione del film superarono nettamente il budget previsto a causa dell'iperinflazione argentina, obbligando Panzer e Clemens a chiedere un prestito ad una compagnia del posto. Questa apportò diverse modifiche al montaggio finale senza consultare Mulcahy. Il risultato finale, distribuito solo nelle sale americane, fu accolto negativamente dal pubblico e dalla critica, che biasimò al film l'uso eccessivo di retcon, grossi buchi nella trama, una storia confusa e un editing mal riuscito. Highlander II - Il ritorno è considerato tuttora uno dei peggiori film di fantascienza e della storia del cinema, tanto che la rivista Empire lo ha collocato al 9º posto nella classifica dei 50 film peggiori di sempre votati dai lettori. Mulcahy lo considera il suo peggior film in assoluto ed è convinto che l'accoglienza negativa al film sia dovuta ai produttori, che non gli lasciarono mai totale libertà creativa, e ai cambiamenti apportati al montaggio da parte della compagnia argentina. Non a caso, quattro anni dopo l'uscita della pellicola, il regista distribuì una propria versione denominata Renegade Version, completamente rimontata, a cui seguì nel 2004 una Special Edition, una versione digitalmente rimasterizzata. Film ukazał się w kilku wersjach kinowych, m.in. Highlander II: Nowe życie, a to ze względu na wymuszony przez producentów montaż, który sprawił, iż nadmiar wątków w scenariuszu, jak też fabuła stały się mało logiczne. Według wersji producentów, nieśmiertelni byli przybyszami z kosmosu podbijającymi Ziemię bez konkretnego celu. Film spotkał się ze sprzeciwem zarówno ze strony reżysera, głównego bohatera, jak i części fanów. Mulcahy pod koniec lat 90. z dostępnych kadrów filmu ułożył na nowo historię Connora MacLeoda, przeplatając ją z historią pradawnych wojów, którzy dysponując najpotężniejszymi siłami na Ziemi rozdzielili je między siebie.
