Designed by Hans von Ohain while working at Heinkel, the engine first flew as the primary power of the Heinkel He 178, piloted by Erich Warsitz on 27 August 1939. Although successful, the engine had too little thrust to be really useful, and work started on the more powerful Heinkel HeS 8 as their first production design. (en)

Fu il primo motore turbogetto ad avere un'utilizzazione pratica montato sul prototipo Heinkel He 178 e che per questo detiene il primato di essere stato, il 27 agosto 1939, il primo aereo a getto a volare nella storia dell'aeronautica. Anche se risultò un successo, il motore era dotato di un valore di spinta troppo modesto per poter avere un impiego pratico, ma grazie all'esperienza acquisita fu sviluppato il più potente Heinkel HeS 8A.
