- Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮 ハルヒ, Suzumiya Haruhi) is a fictional character introduced as the title character and heroine of the Japanese media franchise Haruhi Suzumiya, written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Ito. Haruhi first appears in the novel volumes which began in 2003, and later appears in the anime television series adaptation by Kyoto Animation, and the animated film The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. She also appears in related media in the franchise including the manga adaptation, two original net animation series, and video games. Aya Hirano voices Haruhi in Japanese in all her animated appearances, and Wendee Lee voices her in the English dub. She is also portrayed by Patricia Ja Lee and Cristina Vee in the live action series ASOS Brigade. Within the series, Haruhi is an eccentric and headstrong schoolgirl, who is depicted as having a great disdain for anything that she views as normal or mundane, and is only interested in supernatural beings or mysterious occurrences. Her displeasure with the school's "normal" after-school clubs leads Haruhi to gather up several students (Kyon, Yuki Nagato, Mikuru Asahina, and Itsuki Koizumi) and found her own: the SOS Brigade, making them participate in activities whether they like it or not. Haruhi also, unknown to her, possesses unconscious god-like abilities to change, destroy, and reshape reality to her desires. The activities of the club and its members become increasingly involved with incidents caused by her abilities. In an interview, series creator Tanigawa stated that the idea for the character came during a sleepless night at the beginning of the 21st century. Despite the franchise being named after her, it is told from the perspective of Kyon. Haruhi is considered by some to have tsundere character traits in her treatment of Kyon, but is perceived by others as "too energetic" to be a true tsundere. She has appeared in surveys to decide the most popular anime characters in Japan, and in 2009 was included in IGN's ranking of the greatest anime characters of all time. (en)

Elle est également l'héroïne de la La Mélancolie de Haruhi Suzumiya. Elle est décrite par ses camarades de classe comme excentrique, belle et explosive. Elle est très sportive, et on mentionne ses notes comme « meilleures que les autres ». Sa vie sociale est par contre inexistante, elle rejette tout papotage et est vue par ses camarades de classe comme une folle. Elle semble uniquement intéressée par les extraterrestres, les gens dotés de pouvoirs surnaturels, les voyageurs du temps et les voyageurs interdimensionnels. Elle n'a apparemment aucun intérêt pour les humains normaux. Pour ce qui est des garçons, elle ne refuse aucun rendez-vous, mais semble se défaire de son compagnon dans les cinq minutes qui suivent, en citant des raisons comme « les rendez-vous sont répétitifs » ou « le mec était stupide ». Elle considère en effet les garçons comme des légumes et n'hésite pas à se changer pour les cours de sport alors qu'ils sont encore dans la classe (les élèves doivent se changer dans des vestiaires séparés pour les deux sexes). Haruhi est la fondatrice du club « La Brigade de Haruhi Suzumiya pour offrir au monde des sensations fortes », abrégé en Brigade SOS (SOS団 Sekai wo Oini moriagerutame no Suzumiya Haruhi no Dan). Le club est composé de cinq membres : Haruhi, Kyon, Mikuru, Yuki, et Itsuki. Le but de ce club est « d'apporter plus d'excitation dans le monde », et la seule contribution connue que la Brigade SOS a produite est un film pour le festival culturel du lycée intitulé Episode 00 : Les Aventures de Mikuru Asahina, avec Mikuru, Yuki et Itsuki en personnages principaux, filmé par Kyon et réalisé par Haruhi. Elle est considérée comme la cause de l'incident survenu il y a trois ans, lorsqu'il y a eu une faille dans le continuum espace-temps, qui a affecté toute vie dans l'univers, et qui a aussi donné à certaines formes de vie sélectionnées des pouvoirs surnaturels.
