- Das Groote Schuur Hospital (niederländisch für Große Scheune, auch GSH oder umgangssprachlich Grotties genannt) ist ein Krankenhaus in Kapstadt. 1938 gegründet, wurde es bekannt, nachdem hier der südafrikanische Arzt Christiaan Barnard im Jahre 1967 die weltweit erste Herztransplantation durchgeführt hatte. Ein angeschlossenes Museum widmet sich unter anderem diesem Ereignis. Groote Schuur ist zudem das Lehrkrankenhaus der medizinischen Fakultät der Universität Kapstadt. 1984 wurde es bedeutend mit zwei neuen Anbauten erweitert. 2007 arbeiteten hier weit über 500 Ärzte, 1300 Pfleger sowie rund 250 sonstige Mediziner. Fue fundado en 1938 y es famoso por ser el lugar donde se realizó el primer trasplante de corazón, llevado a cabo por el cirujano de la Universidad de Ciudad del Cabo Christiaan Barnard sobre el paciente Louis Washkansky. El Groote Schuur es el principal hospital académico adscrito a la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Ciudad del Cabo, el cual provee atención especializada así como instruye a los alumnos de la Universidad. El hospital sufrió una extensa ampliación en 1984 añadiéndosele dos nuevas alas; el antiguo edificio principal se reconvirtió en sede de los distintos departamentos médicos así como hogar de un nuevo museo sobre el primer trasplante de corazón. El hospital es una institución de investigación de fama internacional y además posee renombre mundial gracias a sus áreas de trauma, anestesiología y medicina interna. Cada año el centro recibe la visita de muchos estudiantes de medicina, residentes y especialistas los cuales ganan experiencia en diferentes campos. It was founded in 1938 and is famous for being the institution where the first human-to-human heart transplant took place, conducted by University of Cape Town-educated surgeon Christiaan Barnard on the patient Louis Washkansky. Groote Schuur is the chief academic hospital of the University of Cape Town's medical school, providing tertiary care and instruction in all the major branches of medicine. The hospital underwent major extension in 1984 when two new wings were added. As such, the old main building now mainly houses several academic clinical departments as well as a museum about the first human heart transplant. The hospital is known for its trauma unit, anaesthesiology and internal medicine departments. Groote Schuur attracts many visiting medical students, residents and specialists each year who come to gain experience in various fields. As December 2006, the hospital employed over 500 doctors, 1300 nurses and 250 allied health professionals. Groote Schuur is Dutch for 'Great Barn' and is named after the original Groote Schuur estate laid out by Dutch settlers when the city of Cape Town was founded in the 17th century. The hospital was declared a Western Cape Provincial Heritage Site in 1996. The N2, merged with the M3, bends around the hospital and Table Mountain National Park on a massive uphill 10-lane highway. De 55-jarige Louis Washkansky kreeg het hart van de bij een auto-ongeluk om het leven gekomen Denise Darvall. Barnard en het ziekenhuis raakten door deze ingreep wereldbekend.
