- Corwin, a Prince of Amber, is the main character in the first five books of Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber. He is the second son of Oberon and Faiella, and the father of Merlin. Within the novels, much of the action centers on Corwin and his family as they plot against one another conspiring to become the King of Amber. In the first book of the series, Nine Princes in Amber, Corwin is identified as the eldest heir to the throne who has a legitimate claim. The matter of succession is hotly (and frequently) contested within the family, particularly during the prolonged absence of Oberon, and loyalties constantly shift among the undecided. Corwin has dark hair and green eyes. His colours are black and silver (alternately gray), and his symbol is a silver rose. Corwin's favoured weapon is his sword Grayswandir, and his use of magic is extremely limited. While a few of his siblings exceed him in certain skills, such as arms (Benedict), strength (Gérard), and magic (Brand, Fiona, and Bleys), Corwin is well-balanced in most and is the best leader of them all. He also exemplifies stamina throughout the series. Corwin is a quick and strategic thinker. Like his brothers and sisters, he boasts remarkable endurance and regeneration abilities, even more so than his siblings. While Corwin acts with a strong personal code of honor, he is also extremely practical; he will not engage in a fight of principle unless he believes he has a chance to win, and he is perfectly willing to employ subterfuge to defeat an opponent. - Corwin, Prince d'Ambre est le personnage principal de la première partie du cycle des Princes d'Ambre de Roger Zelazny. Il appartient à une fratrie constituée d'Eric, né hors mariage et non reconnu, de Corwin et Deirdre, les deux seuls enfants légitimes née du mariage de Faiella et Obéron, premier roi d'Ambre. Corwin est le père de Merlin d'Ambre. Amnésique, il recherche tout d'abord sa mémoire et ses origines, avant de réclamer le trône d'Ambre à son frère Eric qu'il hait. Soldat et poète, il protégera le royaume d'Ambre et la Marelle de toutes ses forces face à un autre de ses frères, Brand, allié aux forces du Chaos. Enfin, il sera désigné comme successeur du trône mais il refusera de porter la couronne, bien que lui revenant de droit, tout en continuant d'assumer les problèmes inhérents et la protection de la Marelle. Ses couleurs sont le noir et l'argent. Sa cape est agrafée d'une rose d'argent, son symbole. Il possède une épée particulière, Grayswandir (jumelle de Werewindle, l'épée de Brand), dont la lame porte un fragment de la Marelle. Corwin se démarque des autres membres de la famille pour avoir séjourné longtemps (plusieurs siècles) sur l'Ombre Terre, lui conférant cette sensibilité, cette humanité et un certain sens du devoir. Il est l'héritier légitime du trône d'Ambre mais c'est probablement pour ce qu'il est qu'Obéron lui proposa de diriger Ambre. Ce long séjour lui a également permis d'améliorer et d'enrichir ses compétences de bretteur, faisant de lui un adversaire redoutable et donc craint. Mais c'est surtout son impétuosité, son opportunisme et son esprit d'initiative qui lui valent autant d'admiration que de haine de la part de ses frères et sœurs. (fr)
