- Grand Central is an open-access train operating company in the United Kingdom. Presently a subsidiary of Arriva UK Trains, it has operated passenger rail services since December 2007. The company was founded in April 2000 as Grand Central Railway Company Ltd. Three years later, the company applied to the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) to operate a two-hourly open-access service from Newcastle via the Caldervale Line and Manchester Victoria to Bolton, which was rejected. In February 2005, Grand Central successfully applied to operate four daily services from Sunderland to London King's Cross and four daily services from Bradford Interchange to London King's Cross. During December 2007, Grand Central launched its first services on the East Coast Main Line, running between Sunderland and London King's Cross. Following the delivery and refurbishment of additional rolling stock, its full timetable was introduced during March 2008. During March 2008, Grand Central successfully applied to the ORR to operate three daily services from Bradford Interchange and London King's Cross; operations commenced on these services during May 2010. In November 2011, Grand Central was acquired by Arriva UK Trains, operating as its subsidiary thereafter. In August 2014, the company was granted an extension of its operating rights until December 2026. Due to the unreliability of its initial fleet of Intercity 125s, these have been replaced by other rolling stock, the company currently operates several British Rail Class 180 Adelantes. Furthermore, Grand Central has openly released various proposals for operating additional services in the future. One such service, from London Euston to Blackpool North via the West Coast Main Line, was at one point scheduled to begin in 2021, but the initiative was cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Net als Hull Trains, heeft Grand Central geen vervoersconcessie en wil het bedrijf treindiensten uitvoeren op eigen initiatief, naar eigen inzichten en op eigen risico. Het bedrijf is in de jaren negentig opgericht met het doel een snelle treindienst te gaan aanbieden tussen Manchester en Newcastle. Dit voorstel werd door de Office of the Rail Regulator (ORR), de instantie die de railverkeersruimte op het spoor verdeeld, verworpen. In maart 2006 kreeg Grand Central wel toestemming om een treindienst uit te voeren tussen Londen (station King's Cross) en Sunderland. De trein zal onderweg stoppen in Doncaster, York, Thirsk, Northallerton, Eaglescliffe (nabij Middlesbrough) en Hartlepool. In december 2006 zal Grand Central met deze treindienst beginnen. Bij Bombardier zijn vijf dieseltreinstellen van het type 'Class 222' besteld. Op 4 november 2011 werd bekend dat Grand Central Railways door DB dochter Arriva wordt overgenomen. (nl)
