Der Roman wurde 2005 mit dem Pulitzer-Preis für Belletristik und dem National Book Critics Circle Award ausgezeichnet. Es handelt sich um Robinsons zweiten Roman, nach ihrem Debüt Haus ohne Halt (Original: Houskeeping) im Jahr 1980. Gilead ist ein Briefroman – die gesamte Erzählung besteht aus einer einzigen, zwar episodischen aber fortlaufenden Aufzeichnung, die zu verschiedenen Gelegenheiten in einer Kombination aus Tagebuch und Memoiren verfasst wurde. Deutsche Ausgaben des Romans erschienen, in unterschiedlichen Übersetzungen, in den Jahren 2006 und 2016. Es handelt sich um die fiktionale Autobiographie des Hochwürden John Ames, eines älteren, weißen Pastors einer kongregationalistischen Gemeinde in der ebenfalls fiktionalen, abgeschiedenen Kleinstadt Gilead, Iowa. Ames weiß, dass er bald an einem Herzleiden sterben wird. Das Buch beginnt mit einem Eintrag aus dem Jahr 1956, in dem Ames sein Projekt erklärt: Er möchte seine Lebenserinnerungen für seinen siebenjährigen Sohn niederschreiben, der sonst nur wenige Erinnerungen an ihn haben wird. Ames gibt an, dass er 1880 geboren wurde und dass er zum Zeitpunkt der Niederschrift 76 Jahre alt ist. (de)

It is Robinson's second novel, following Housekeeping (1980). Gilead is an epistolary novel, as the entire narrative is a single, continuing, albeit episodic, document, written on several occasions in a form combining a journal and a memoir. It comprises the fictional autobiography of the Reverend John Ames, an elderly, white Congregationalist pastor in the small, secluded town of Gilead, Iowa (also fictional), who knows that he is dying of a heart condition. At the beginning of the book, the date is established as 1956, and Ames explains that he is writing an account of his life for his seven-year-old son, who will have few memories of him. Ames indicates he was born in 1880 and that, at the time of writing, he is seventy-six years old. (en)
