- Ghost Train to the Eastern Star is a 2008 train travel book by Paul Theroux. In this book, he retraces some of the trip described in The Great Railway Bazaar. He travels from London, through Europe on the Orient Express and then through Turkey, Turkmenistan, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Japan before making his way home on the Trans-Siberian Railway.He realizes that what has really changed compared to his first trip is himself and not just the countries. Theroux was 33 years old at the time of the first book, and twice that age for the second trip. In his trip Theroux encounters beauty and kindness but also various troubling and dysfunctional countries, plagued by poverty, over-crowding, dictators and government control and oppression. This book is similar in concept to Dark Star Safari, his account of returning to see how Africa had changed, in the long interval since his time of living and working there while an early member of the Peace Corps. Theroux's travel coincides with the early part of the American invasion of Iraq. A previous book, The Happy Isles of Oceania, coincided with the First Gulf War. Theroux includes his experiences with people and their reaction to these wars in his work. (en)

Ghost train to the Eastern Star: On the tracks of the Great Railway Bazaar) – powieść podróżnicza Paula Theroux z 2008. Polskie tłumaczenie ukazało się w 2010 (Wydawnictwo Czarne). Powieść jest nawiązaniem do odbytej przez autora podróży podobnym szlakiem w 1973, opisanej w Wielkim bazarze kolejowym. Autor, po trzydziestu latach wybrał się w kolejową podróż szlakiem zbliżonym do opisanego, celem prześledzenia zmian społecznych i gospodarczych, jakie dokonały się w Azji Środkowej, Wschodniej i Południowo-Wschodniej przez trzy dekady. W międzyczasie rozpadł się Związek Radziecki, nastąpił gwałtowny, ale bardzo niezrównoważony rozwój Indii, a w Birmie nastała dyktatura wojskowa. Ze względu na wojnę z Talibami, autor nie mógł przejechać przez Afganistan i Pakistan, a odwiedził za to Turkmenistan i Uzbekistan. Theroux darzył kolej dużym sentymentem, co było przyczyną wyboru środka podróży. Odcinki niemożliwe do pokonania pociągami zostały przebyte samolotami, samochodami, promami lub autobusami. Neste livro, ele reconstitui grande parte da viagem descrita em O Grande Bazar Ferroviário. Ele parte de Londres, atravessa a Europa no Expresso do Oriente e, em seguida, percorre a Turquia, Geórgia, Azerbaijão, Turcomenistão, Uzbequistão, Índia, Sri Lanka, Mianmá (antiga Birmânia), Tailândia, Laos, Malásia, Singapura, Camboja, Vietnã, China e Japão antes de fazer seu percurso de volta na Ferrovia Transiberiana. Ele percebe que não apenas os países, mas ele mesmo também mudou em relação à sua primeira viagem. Theroux tinha 33 anos na época do primeiro livro, enquanto faz a segunda viagem aos 66 anos, o dobro da idade. Em seu trajeto Theroux encontra beleza e bondade, mas também vários países preocupantes e problemáticos, assolados pela pobreza, superpopulação, ditadores, controle governamental e opressão.
