V raných letech využívala jeho služeb i skupina Steeleye Span, se kterými byl kamarád. Hrál na jejich dnes už klasickém albu Dark-Eyed Sailor. Ve studiu se podílel na debutových sólo albech Sandy Denny a . Šest let jezdil po koncertech a nahrával jako člen skupiny Cata Stevense. Ein Jahr später schloss er sich der Band an; es folgte die Folkrockband Fotheringay. 1970 wirkte er bei Steeleye Spans Debütalbum als Drummer mit. Bis 1975 spielte er dann in der Begleitband von Cat Stevens. In den frühen 1980er Jahren wurde Conway Mitglied von Jethro Tull, bei denen er bis 1982 festes Mitglied war. Er spielte jedoch gelegentlich weiterhin mit der Band zusammen. 1990 setzte er seine Karriere fort, indem er sich Pentangle anschloss. W latach 1982-1984 był stałym członkiem zespołu Jethro Tull i współtwórcą ich albumu The Broadsword and the Beast. Po odejściu z zespołu powrócił do roli muzyka sesyjnego.
