- Ο Ζερμαίν Πιρλό (γαλλικά: Germain Pirlot) είναι Βέλγος δάσκαλος της γαλλικής γλώσσας και ιστορίας. Είναι γνωστός ως ο εφευρέτης της ονομασίας ευρώ για το κοινό νόμισμα της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης (ΕΕ). Στις 4 Αυγούστου 1995 ο Πιρλό έστειλε μια επιστολή στον τότε Πρόεδρο της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής, Ζακ Σαντέρ, με την οποία εισηγείτο την ονομασία ευρώ για το σχεδιαζόμενο νόμισμα της ΕΕ. Αργότερα, ο Πιρλό έλαβε μια επίσημη ευχαριστήρια επιστολή για την εισήγηση του. Η ονομασία ευρώ υιοθετήθηκε επίσημη από το Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο στη Μαδρίτη (Ισπανία) στις 16 Δεκεμβρίου 1995. Li estis instruisto de la franca lingvo kaj historio en mezgrada lernejo kaj altlernejo. Pirlot dum multaj jaroj kolektis kaj regule publikigis informojn pri simpati-esprimoj de politikistoj pri Esperanto. Li ankaŭ organizis varbadon por Esperanto ĉe anoj de la Eŭropa Parlamento. De 1977 al 1992 Pirlot kolektis kaj publikigis informojn pri oficialaj Esperanto-kursoj ĉe universitatoj, publikigitaj en pluraj lingvoj. Versioj de Oficiala situacio de la Esperanto-instruado en la mondo aperis ankaŭ en la franca (1982), la korea (1984), la nederlanda (1985), la pola (1986) kaj la ĉina (1981,1987,1989). He is best known as the inventor of the name euro for the common currency of the European Union (EU). On 4 August 1995, Pirlot sent a letter to then President of the European Commission, Jacques Santer, in which he suggested the name euro to be used for the planned currency of the EU. Later, Pirlot received an official letter thanking him for the suggestion. The name euro was officially adopted by the European Council in Madrid (Spain) on 16 December 1995. , chairman of (Association for the promotion of the euro), claims that to his knowledge nobody else had suggested to use this name for the currency before 4 August 1995. Another suggestion made by Pirlot in the same letter, to name the hundredth of the currency "ropas", has not been realized – instead, the name "cent" has been adopted. (en)
