Il a publié ses essais sur son blog pendant trois semaines et il a été aidé par quatre autres hackers. Il a publié gratuitement sa méthode de déverrouillage sur son blog, accompagnée d'une vidéo didactique : il faut éventrer l'appareil, couper des fils, faire une soudure, puis le reprogrammer avec un logiciel spécial. Le 24 août invité par la chaîne de télévision CNBC, il fait la manipulation en direct. Un riche propriétaire d'une entreprise de réparation de téléphones mobiles installée dans le Kentucky et propriétaire d'une usine en Chine lui propose d'échanger son iPhone déverrouillé contre une voiture neuve valant 38 000 dollars. Georges Hotz est d'accord mais demande trois iPhone en plus pour les hackers qui l'ont aidé. Il entre en première année à l'Institut de technologie de Rochester en 2007. La même année, en septembre, il a ouvert un blog sur son nouveau passe temps: la mise au point d'un système de géolocalisation pour iPhone.
