Après avoir travaillé pour la (en), il rejoint le Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies du United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) à Washington. Megargee est l'auteur et l'éditeur de plusieurs livres consacrés à l'histoire de l'Allemagne nazie.
