| - Freaky Styley is the second album by Red Hot Chili Peppers, released in 1985 through EMI America. It saw the band back with original guitarist Hillel Slovak. It had four singles: "Jungle Man", "American Ghost Dance", "Catholic School Girls Rule", and "Hollywood ". The cover artwork features the band jumping in front of Michelangelo's Last Judgment.It was produced by George Clinton of Parliament-Funkadelic and featured a full horn section, with Flea actually being a part. It never dented the Billboard Top 200, and most professional critics ignored it completely and have, in most cases, continued to do so. However, regardless of this, many fans believe it is a classic Chili Peppers' album and a prime example of the 80s funk rock movement. The track "Yertle the Turtle" uses several verses directly from Dr. Seuss' poem also named "Yertle the Turtle". As stated by Kiedis in his autobiography Scar Tissue the spoken lyrics at the beginning and throughout the song were by George Clinton's drug dealer who demanded debts be payed by Clinton, unable to repay the dealer Clinton offered him a part on the album. Toutefois, il reste très apprécié des fans de la première heure des Red Hot.Le groupe californien enregistre le retour d'Hillel Slovak à la guitare sur cet album mais une grande majorité des chansons composant l'album avait été écrite avant le départ de Jack Sherman, l'alchimie des débuts n'est encore pas tout à fait présente sur cet album, ceci pouvant expliquer le nouvel échec. A la suite de celui-ci, le batteur Cliff Martinez décide à son tour de quitter le groupe, pour redonner sa place à Jack Irons qui pourra enregistrer en 1987 The Uplift Mofo Party Plan avec le reste du line-up originel du groupe. Wśród nich znajduje się też miniballada Lovin' And Touchin oraz Sex Rap z bardzo gęstym, popisowym wstępem perkusyjnym i gitarowym solo. Na Freaky Styley znalazły się przeróbki Hollywood z repertuaru The Meters i If You Want Me To Stay, kompozycja Sly and the Family Stone. Pierwszy przynosi wyjątkowo bogatą fakturę dźwięków, zmiany dynamiczne. Obecne są instrumenty dęte i oszczędna, zagrana z wyczuciem solówka Slovaka. Z kolei If You Want Me To Stay przenosi nas na soulową dyskotekę lat 70. XX w. (pl)
