- Francisco Hudson Cárdenas (Curaco de Vélez, Chile, July 1, 1826 – March, 1859) was a Chilean naval officer and hydrographer notable for his explorations of Southern Chile and Chilean Patagonia. Hudson sailed on behalf of the Chilean government several times to Peru and Ecuador, assisted the German immigrants arrive to Valdivia but gained notoriety for his explorations and investigations of Maullín River, Roca Remolino and the channels of Aysén Region. Hudson was interested in investigating the possible existence of a sailing route through internal waters from the Chiloé Archipelago to the Straits of Magellan, but came to realize that the Isthmus of Ofqui made this impossible. However his hydrographic works laid the groundwork for Hans Steffen's exploration of Aysén Region in late 19th century. (en)

Navegó varias veces al Perú y Ecuador, pero ganó notoriedad por sus exploraciones e investigaciones sobre el río Maullín, Roca Remolinos y los canales de la región de Aysén. En esta región planteó la posible existencia de una ruta de navegación a través de aguas interiores desde el Archipiélago de Chiloé hasta el Estrecho de Magallanes, descubriendo posteriormente que el Istmo de Ofqui lo hacía imposible. C'était un officier de marine chilien et hydrographe remarquable pour ses explorations du sud du Chili et de la Patagonie chilienne. Hudson a navigué au nom du gouvernement chilien à plusieurs reprises au Pérou et en Équateur , il a aidé les immigrants allemands à arriver à Valdivia mais a gagné en notoriété pour ses explorations et ses enquêtes sur la rivière Maullín , (en) et les canaux de la Région d'Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo. Hudson était intéressé à enquêter sur l'existence possible d'une route de navigation à travers les eaux intérieures de l'archipel de Chiloé au détroit de Magellan , mais il en vint à se rendre compte que l' isthme d'Ofqui rendait cela impossible.
