- Forensic firearm examination is the forensic process of examining the characteristics of firearms or bullets left behind at a crime scene. Specialists in this field try to link bullets to weapons and weapons to individuals. They can raise and record obliterated serial numbers in an attempt to find the registered owner of a weapon and look for fingerprints on a weapon and cartridges. By examining unique striations impressed into a bullet from the barrel of a gun, expended ammunition can be linked back to a specific weapon. These striations are due to the rifling inside the barrels of firearms. Rifling spins the bullet when it is fired out of the barrel to improve precision. Although bullet striations are individualized unique evidence, microscopic striations in the barrel of the weapon are subject to change slightly, after each round that is fired. For this reason, forensic ballistics examiners may not fire more than five shots from a weapon found at a scene. Known exemplars taken from a seized weapon can be compared to samples recovered from a scene using a comparison microscope as well as newer 3-D imaging technology. Striation images can also be uploaded to national databases. Furthermore, the markings can be compared to other images in an attempt to link one weapon to multiple crime scenes. Like all forensic specialties, forensic firearm examiners are subject to being called to testify in court as expert witnesses. - La balistique judiciaire est une technique de police scientifique permettant d'élucider les circonstances d'un tir par arme à feu. Elle consiste à essayer de déterminer la nature de l’arme utilisée, le nombre de coups de feu tirés, la direction et la distance de tir. Elle étudie aussi les effets subis par les projectiles pour retrouver l’arme utilisée mais aussi les impacts et les blessures. Elle étudie d'une part les effets subis par des projectiles tirés par des armes à feu, afin de pouvoir déterminer quelle arme a tiré une balle ou percuté un étui, et d'autre part les trajectoires, les impacts et les blessures. Pour identifier l'arme à l'origine d'un tir, on étudie les marques laissées par différentes actions lors du tir. Lorsqu'on appuie sur la détente d'une arme, le marteau frappe le percuteur, qui imprime une marque sur l'amorce à la base de la douille ; de même d'autres pièces mécaniques s'impriment sur cette douille. La balle quant à elle est projetée avec force hors du canon. Dans celui-ci se trouvent des rainures métalliques (on parle de canon rayé ou de rifling) conçues pour imprimer un mouvement de rotation à la balle, ce qui en augmente la portée et la stabilité ; elles laissent des rayures sur la balle. Chaque tir avec la même arme laisse les mêmes empreintes sur les étuis et sur les balles ce qui permet de les comparer. Quant à l'étude des trajectoires et des impacts, elle se traduit par la mise en évidence des angles et des distances de tir. (fr)

Займається дослідженням вогнепальної зброї і боєприпасів до неї з метою встановлення справності зброї, визначення типу, моделі і калібру зброї, визначення напрямку пострілу, дистанції та інших обставин, що мають якесь значення для розкриття злочинів, скоєних з використанням вогнепальної та іншого зброї. Об'єктами експертизи є:
* стрілецька вогнепальна зброя, окремі вузли і деталі такої зброї;
* бойові припаси до вогнепальної зброї, компоненти спорядження боєприпасів, відстріляні гільзи і снаряди (кулі, картечний дріб);
* інструменти і матеріали, які використовувались для виготовлення вогнепальної зброї і боєприпасів;
* вогнепальні пошкодження та інші сліди пострілу (полум'я, кіптява, змащення, металізація тощо). Є різні методи експертизи:
* спектральні,
* рентгеноструктурні,
* молекулярні,
* радіоактивні,
* хроматографічні,
* атомно-адсорбційні,
* фотографічні,
* мікроскопічні методи досліджень у видимих і невидимих зонах спектра (ультрафіолетовій, інфрачервоній). Останнім часом у практиці балістичної експертизи набула поширення обробка інформації про сліди, залишені вогнепальною зброєю, за допомогою комп'ютерної техніки. (uk)
