- Florence Hamilton Randal Livesay (November 3, 1874 – July 28, 1953) was a Canadian writer. The daughter of Mary Louisa Andrews and Stephen Randal, she was born Florence Hamilton Randal in Compton, Quebec. She was educated at the Compton Ladies' College. She taught one year at a private school in New York City, then worked seven years as society editor and women's page editor for the Evening Journal in Ottawa. In 1902, she was one of forty Canadian teachers sent to teach in Boer concentration camps in South Africa. She came to Winnipeg in 1903 and worked three years for the Winnipeg Telegram. Livesay then worked for the Manitoba Free Press. She also contributed short stories, poetry and articles to magazines and newspapers in Canada and the United States. Livesay was also known for translating poetry from Ukrainian to English. She was a member of the Canadian Women's Press Club. The family moved to Clarkson, Ontario near Toronto in 1920. She married John Frederick Bligh Livesay in 1908. The couple had two daughters: the poet Dorothy Livesay and Sophie. Livesay is credited with helping develop Dorothy's career by submitting her early poems to journals and giving editorial advice for her first poetry collections. She moved to Toronto after her husband died in 1944. Livesay later moved to Grimsby where she died at the age of 78. (en)

Randal arbeitete nach dem Tod ihres Vaters 1888 als Erzieherin und Lehrerin und veröffentlichte Gedichte und Kurzgeschichten im Massey's Magazine. In den 1890er Jahren wurde sie Herausgeberin der Gesellschaftsseite des Ottawa Evening Journal. 1902 ging sie nach Südafrika, um dort in Konzentrationslagern für Buren zu unterrichten. Sie schickte von dort vierzehntäglich Reportagen an das Journal und schrieb einen Bericht ihrer Erlebnisse für das Winnipeg Telegram. Literarische Texte veröffentlichte sie zugleich in der Zeitschrift Saturday Night. Nach ihrer Rückkehr nach Kanada übernahm sie 1906 die Frauenseite des Telegram. Später wurde sie Mitarbeiterin der Winnipeg Free Press, für die sie vor allem über Fragen der Frauenbewegung und Gleichberechtigung schrieb. 1908 heiratete sie den Journalisten und späteren Mitbegründer der Canadian Press, John Frederick Bligh Lindsay. Mit ihm hatte sie drei Kinder, darunter Dorothy Livesay, die als Lyrikerin bekannt wurde. Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes zog Randal nach Toronto, später nach Grimsby. Randals Kurzgeschichten und Gedichte wurden in verschiedenen kanadischen und ausländischen Literaturzeitschriften (u. a. Outlook, Dial und Poetry) veröffentlicht. 1916 erschienen die von ihr aus dem Ukrainischen und Ruthenischen übersetzten Songs of Ukrainia. 1923 folgte der Gedichtband Shepherd's Purse, 1927 der Roman Savour of Salt. 1947 gab sie die unvollendete Autobiographie ihres Mannes The Making of a Canadian: J. F. B. Livesay heraus. Von dem historischen Roman The Moon and the Morning Star vollendete sie nur eine Rohfassung. (de)
