- Das Fields Institute ist ein internationales Forschungszentrum an der University of Toronto im Bereich der Mathematik. Das Institut wurde nach dem kanadischen Mathematiker John Charles Fields, dem Stifter der Fields-Medaille, benannt. Das Institut wurde 1992 gegründet und befand sich anfangs an der University of Waterloo, bevor es 1995 nach Toronto umgesiedelt wurde. Im Institut treffen sich in regelmäßigen Abständen die Mathematiker aus verschiedenen Ländern. Das Institut unterstützt den Austausch zwischen Mathematikern und Forschern anderer Fachbereiche wie Statistik, Informatik, Ingenieurwissenschaften, Physik, Biologie, Medizin, Ökonomie und Wirtschaftswissenschaften sowie Telekommunikationstechnologie und IT. Es werden monatliche Vorträge von Professoren der jeweiligen Fachbereiche abgehalten. Hinzu kommen Vorträge andere Forscher aus privaten Forschungsinstituten. Das Institut verfügt über ein eigenes Gebäude an der Universität von Toronto. Es verfügt über einen Stab von bis zu 66 Forschern und ermöglicht direkten Zugang zu der mathematischen Bibliothek der Universität. Als Fields Institute Monographs (FIM) werden Forschungstätigkeiten publiziert. Die Forschungsergebnisse werden von der American Mathematical Society veröffentlicht. Mit dem Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences in Vancouver und dem CRM in Montreal verleihen sie den CRM-Fields-PIMS-Preis. (de)
- The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, commonly known simply as the Fields Institute, is an international centre for scientific research in mathematical sciences. It is an independent non-profit with strong ties to 20 Ontario universities, including the University of Toronto, where it occupies a purpose-built building on the St. George campus. Fields was established in 1992, and was briefly based at the University of Waterloo before relocating to Toronto in 1995. The institute is named after Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields, after whom the Fields Medal is also named. Fields' name was given to the institute in recognition of his contributions to mathematics and his work on behalf of high level mathematical scholarship in Canada. As a centre for mathematical activity, the institute brings together mathematicians from Canada and abroad. It also supports the collaboration between professional mathematicians and researchers in other domains, such as statistics, computer science, engineering, physical and biological sciences, medicine, economics and finance, telecommunications and information systems. It also holds monthly meetings on mathematics education, attended by participants from secondary school boards, university mathematics departments and the private sector. (en)
