- Als Fiasco (ital. fiasco „bauchige Flasche“ zu mittellat. flasco „Fässchen“) bezeichnet man eine strohummantelte Flasche für Chianti. Darüber hinaus wird die Bezeichnung „Fiasco“ oft auch für andere Flaschenarten und Weinarten benutzt. Sie entwickelte sich bereits im Spätmittelalter aus den Tonfässern der Antike; die Strohumhüllung diente ursprünglich dazu, das damals dünnwandige Glas vor Beschädigung durch Anstoßen, etwa an der danebenstehenden Flasche, zu schützen. - A fiasco (/fiˈæskoʊ/; Italian: [ˈfjasko], plural: fiaschi) is a typical Italian style of bottle, usually with a round body and bottom, partially or completely covered with a close-fitting straw basket. The basket is typically made of sala, a swamp weed, sun-dried and blanched with sulfur. The basket provides protection during transportation and handling, and also a flat base for the container. Thus the glass bottle can have a round bottom, which is much simpler to make by glass blowing. Fiaschi can be efficiently packed for transport, with the necks of inverted bottles safely tucked into the spaces between the baskets of upright ones. (en)

Deze fles - ommanteld met stro - werd in de late middeleeuwen ontwikkeld als bescherming tegen breuken.Zij was vooral in de tweede helft van de 20e eeuw bekend van het wat eenvoudigere type wijn Chianti. Vanwege de hoge kostprijs wordt dit type fles sindsdien niet zo vaak meer gebruikt. (nl)
