- Die Qualifikation für die Fechtenwettbewerbe bei den Olympischen Sommerspielen 2020 erfolgte in erster Linie über die FIE-Rangliste mit dem Stichtag 5. April 2021. Dieser Termin wurde wegen der COVID-19-Pandemie festgelegt, zuvor galt der 4. April 2020 als Stichtag. Des Weiteren gab es die Möglichkeit Quotenplätze über vier kontinentale Qualifikationsturniere zu erkämpfen. Die kontinentalen Qualifikationsturniere sollten ursprünglich im Zeitraum zwischen dem 15. und 19. April 2020 stattfinden. Wegen der COVID-19-Pandemie wurden diese jedoch auf den Zeitraum vom 15. bis 30. April 2021 verschoben. Die bereits über die Rangliste qualifizierten Athleten behielten ihre Quotenplätze. Für jeden Mannschaftswettbewerb qualifizierten sich jeweils acht Mannschaften. Jede Mannschaft bestand dabei aus 3 Fechtern. Neben den vier bestplatzierten Teams qualifizierten sich das nächstbesten Teams eines Kontinents (Afrika, Amerika, Europa und Asien-Ozeanien), sofern diese unter den ersten 16 platziert war. Wenn von einem Kontinent keine Teams unter den Top 16 platziert waren, wurde der Quotenplatz an die bestplatzierte Nation, die noch nicht qualifiziert war, vergeben. Für die Einzelwettbewerbe hatten sich die 3 Fechter jeder Mannschaft aus den Mannschaftswettbewerben automatisch qualifiziert. Zudem wurden sechs weitere Plätze vergeben. So erhielten die zwei besten Fechter aus Europa und Asien-Ozeanien, die sich noch nicht qualifiziert hatten, einen Quotenplatz. Die galt auch für den besten Fechter aus Afrika und Amerika, der noch nicht qualifiziert war. Vier weitere Plätze (einer pro Kontinent) wurden durch kontinentale Turniere vergeben. An diesen Turnieren konnten nur Nationen teilnehmen von denen sich bisher kein Athlet der jeweiligen Disziplin qualifiziert hatte. Die japanische Delegation erhielt zudem als Gastgeber mindestens 8 Quotenplätze. Nicht besetzte Quotenplätze wurden per Wildcard an andere Nationen vergeben. (de)
- This article details the qualifying phase for fencing at the 2020 Summer Olympics (postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Qualification was primarily based on the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE) Official Ranking, with further individual places available at four zonal qualifying tournaments. For the team events, 8 teams qualified in each event. Each team must be composed of 3 fencers, with a fourth alternate. The top 4 ranked teams qualified. The next-best ranked team from each zone (Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Oceania) also qualified as long as it was ranked in the top 16. If a zone does not have any team ranked between fifth and sixteenth, the best-placed nation not already qualified was selected regardless of zone. For individual events the 3 fencers from the team event will qualify for individual competition automatically. 6 more places will be awarded based on the rankings (ignoring fencers from countries with team qualifications, and considering only the top fencer from each country): the top 2 fencers from each of Europe and Asia-Oceania, and the top 1 fencer from Africa and the Americas. 4 more places (1 per zone) will be awarded through zone qualifying tournaments; only countries without a qualified fencer in an event will be eligible to participate in these zone qualifying tournaments. The host country is entitled to 8 quota spots for individual fencers, in addition to those qualified in the above mechanism, respecting the maximum quota of athletes per country (3 per weapon). If enough of these spots will be used to bring to 3 the number of participants in an individual event, the host country will also take part in the corresponding team event, bringing the number of teams to 9. Unused host country spots, should there be any, will be awarded to other countries through the FIE universality quota and the Tripartite Commission. French fencer Daniel Jérent initially qualified to fence in the individual and team epee events, but was banned from participating due to a positive urine test for a banned product. Jérent was replaced by Romain Cannone, who will compete in the two events in which Jérent was entered, and Ronan Gustin was recalled as a team replacement. Cannone would later go on to win the individual event. American Alen Hadzic initially qualified to fence in team epee on Team USA as a replacement athlete. But he was suspended due to sexual misconduct from competing by the United States Center for SafeSport; he then had his suspension reduced to a lesser sanction by an arbitrator. (en)

Elles sont dépendantes des résultats des différentes épreuves des coupes du monde 2018-2019 et 2019-2020 qui constituent le premier critère de qualification, ainsi que de quatre tournois de qualification olympique organisés autour du monde. Comme en 2016, les quotas de sélections prévoient un total de 212 escrimeurs qualifiés pour cette édition des Jeux olympiques. (fr)
- Este artigo detalha a fase de qualificação da esgrima nos Jogos Olímpicos de Verão de 2020.(As Olimpíadas foram adiadas para 2021 devido à pandemia de COVID-19). A qualificação foi primariamente baseada no ranking oficial da Federação Internacional de Esgrima (FIE), com vagas individuais também disponíveis através de torneios de qualificação zonais. Para os eventos por equipes, 8 equipe foram qualificadas para cada competição. Cada equipe deve ser composta por três esgrimistas, com um quarto sendo o reserva. As quatro melhores equipes do ranking estarão automaticamente qualificadas. A próxima equipe de melhor posição de cada zona (África, Américas, Europa e Ásia/Oceania) também ganhará a vaga, contanto que esteja entre as 16 melhores do ranking. Se uma zona não tiver equipes dentro desse critério, a nação de melhor posição no ranking ainda não qualificada será selecionada, independentemente da zona. Para os eventos individuais, os três esgrimistas da equipe qualificada estarão automaticamente aptos a participar. Outras seis vagas serão distribuídas baseadas no ranking (ignorando esgrimistas de nações com equipes já qualificadas, e considerando apenas o melhor esgrimista de cada nação): os 2 melhores da Europa e da Ásia/Oceania, além do melhor da África e das Américas. Quatro outras vagas (uma por zona) serão entregues através de torneios de qualificação zonais; apenas nações sem um esgrimista qualificado para determinado evento poderá disputar a vaga para este evento nos torneios de qualificação zonal. O país-sede recebeu oito vagas para atletas individuais, além daqueles qualificados pelo mecanismo acima, respeitando a cota máxima de atletas por nação (três por arma). Se o número suficiente de vagas for utilizado para totalizar em 3 o número de participantes em um evento individual, o país-sede também poderá participar do correspondente evento por equipe, trazendo o número de equipes para nove. Se houver vagas não utilizadas pelo país-sede, estas serão distribuídas pela FIE pelo critério de universalidade e pela Comissão Tripartite. (pt)
