- Heldentaten und Ansichten des Doktor Faustroll, Pataphysiker ist ein von der Lust am Irrwitz und Paradoxon geprägter neowissenschaftlicher Roman des französischen Schriftstellers und Bohemien Alfred Jarry (1873–1907), der zwischen 1898 und 1903 in verschiedenen literarischen Periodika fragmentarisch erschienen ist. Die erste Gesamtausgabe wurde erst 1911, vier Jahre nach dem frühen Tod des Autors, veröffentlicht. Der Roman, der in der französischen Pléiade-Ausgabe gerade 96 Seiten umfasst, gliedert sich in acht Bücher mit fortlaufender Kapitelzählung. Die insgesamt 41 Textabschnitte sind dabei oftmals nicht länger als eine Seite, sind mehr Skizze oder Erzählminiatur.Das Werk schildert die abenteuerliche Reise des ’Pataphysikers Dr. Faustroll in seinem Boot As zu Wasser von Paris nach Paris in Begleitung desGerichtsvollziehers Panmuffel, der an vielen Stellen als Erzähler oder Augenzeuge fungiert, und des Pavians Backenbuckel. - Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician (original title in French: Gestes et opinions du docteur Faustroll pataphysicien : Roman néo-scientifique suivi de Spéculations) is a novel by French Symbolist author Alfred Jarry which influenced Surrealism. It features Doctor Faustroll (an allusion to Doctor Faustus), a scientist who is born in 1898 in Circassia at the age of 63, and who dies the same year at the same age. Written in 1898, the novel was first published posthumously in 1911 by Fasquelle. It was published in paperback in 2007 by Arléa (Arléa-Poche) on the centenary of Jarry's death. (en)

Powieść została napisana w 1898, a wydana została cztery lata po śmierci autora, w roku 1911. Na końcu książki Jarry napisał: „Koniec. Ta książka nie powinna zostać wydana w całości, dopóki jej autor nie nabierze wystarczająco dużego doświadczenia, aby delektować się wszystkimi urokami [powieści] (Fin. Ce livre ne sera publié intégralement que quand l'auteur aura acquis assez d'experience pour en savourer toutes les beautés). W „Czynach i myślach doktora Faustrolla” zostały przedstawione podstawy ’patafizyki, czyli nauki której celem jest badać to, co w rzeczywistości nie istnieje. Powieść jest również prekursorska dla nurtu surrealistycznego. Przekładu dzieła na polski dokonał Jan Gondowicz w 2000 roku nakładem wydawnictwa W.A.B.. (pl)
