Κατά τ' άλλα διακρίθηκε περισσότερο ως σεναριογράφος, αφού κέρδισε (μαζί με την Έντνα) το Όσκαρ Καλύτερου Πρωτότυπου Σεναρίου, το 1950, για το έργο του στην ταινία Panic in the Streets και το 1964 κέρδισε το Όσκαρ Καλύτερου Διασκευασμένου Σεναρίου, για το έργο του στην ταινία Μπέκετ.
