- Dydko (didko, ditko, dytko, dydo) is a supernatural creature from Polish folklore that was originally a demon from Slavic beliefs, later relegated to the role of a bogeyman. The figure of a Dydko derives from the house guardian demon known in Russia (cf. domowik), degraded after Christianization to the role of a devil, especially a forest devil, and finally to the role of the night scarecrow who was scared of children (cf. bobo). Dydko is pictured as an awkward figure with a large head, usually on straw legs similar to spider legs. According to later beliefs, Dydko appears in the mirror to virgins who spent too much time in front of the mirror. He is believed to appear between midnight and 3:30AM, and to produce a disgusting slurping sound. (en)

Le personnage de la Dydko vient du démon bien connu dans le soin de la maison (cf domowik), après la christianisation du dégradé au rôle du diable, surtout la forêt, et enfin au rôle d'épouvantail de nuit, qui faisaient peur aux enfants (cf bobo). Dydko a été représenté comme une figure maladroite avec une grosse tête, généralement sur des jambes ressemblant à des araignées en forme de paille. Selon les croyances ultérieures, il était censé montrer dans le miroir aux mademoiselles casseroles qui passaient trop de temps devant le miroir. (fr)

Postać dydka wywodzi się od znanego na Rusi demona opiekuńczego domu (por. domowik), po chrystianizacji zdegradowanego do roli diabła, zwłaszcza leśnego, ostatecznie zaś do roli nocnego straszydła, którym straszono dzieci (por. bobo). Dydka wyobrażano sobie jako niezgrabną postać z wielką głową, zazwyczaj na słomianych nogach podobnych do pajęczych odnóży. Według późniejszych wierzeń dydko miał się pokazywać w zwierciadle pannom spędzającym za dużo czasu przed lustrem. Na Podkarpaciu uważano, że bytuje on w puszczach i zaroślach, plącząc szlaki, podmieniając drogowskazy i uprzykrzając życie wędrowcom.
