- Dumarsais Estimé (born April 21, 1900 in Verrettes, died July 20, 1953 in New York) was a Haitian politician and President of the Haitian Republic from August 16, 1946 to May 10, 1950. Previously, he was a member of the Parliament for Verrettes for 16 years, as well as President of the Chamber and Minister (Secretary of State) for Public Education, Agriculture, and Labour. The memory of his presidency remains very prominent among many Haitians due to the reforms undertaken and the undeniable economic and social progress that the Republic of Haiti experienced during this era. Among his achievements, not only the biggest should be remembered, such as the International Exhibition organised in 1949 to commemorate the bicentenary of the founding of Port-au-Prince in 1749 by the French colonists from the island of Santo Domingo (Le Livre Bleu), http://online.fliphtml5.com/msvlu/inpx/#p=1, the creation of the city of Belladère facing the Dominican Republic as a symbol of development, and the construction of the bridge over the Grande Anse which still continues to serve one of the most beautiful regions of Haiti. It is important to also remember the laws passed and the investments made for the development of rural areas, the construction of many schools and the modernisation of the whole education system, as well as the protection of workers’ rights through the Labor Code and ultimately the creation of proper conditions for economic growth, mostly in tourism and small industry sectors. During this period, there was also significant improvement in the living conditions of the Haitian population. In May 1950, a coup d’état organised by a military junta overthrew the government of Estimé and placed its leader, Paul Magloire, as head of the country, where he would be elected to the presidency in October 1950. Estimé was shortly deposed and exiled by the Haitian army led by Franck Lavaud. After several sojourns in France, Jamaica and the USA, he died in New York on 20 July 1953. (en)

De ces réalisations il ne faut pas seulement retenir les plus connues, comme l’Exposition Internationale organisée en 1949 pour commémorer le bicentenaire de la fondation de Port-au-Prince en 1749 par les colons français de l'île de Saint-Domingue [Le Livre Bleu, Haïti 1946 - 1949, Editions Méditerranéennes : http://online.fliphtml5.com/msvlu/inpx/], ou la création de la ville de Belladère comme symbole de développement face à la République Dominicaine, et la construction du pont sur la Grande Anse qui continue encore de nos jours à desservir une des plus belles régions d’Haïti. Il convient aussi de souligner les lois votées et les investissements réalisés pour la mise en valeur des zones rurales, la construction de nombreuses écoles et la modernisation du système éducatif, la protection des droits des travailleurs par la promulgation du Code du Travail et en fin de compte la création de conditions propices à la croissance économique, particulièrement dans le tourisme et la petite industrie, et à l’amélioration des conditions de vie de la population haïtienne. Dumarsais Estimé est destitué par l'armée haïtienne, dirigée par Franck Lavaud. Il est assigné à résidence, puis s'exile à Paris et meurt à New York le 20 juillet 1953. (fr)

Był przewodniczącym Zgromadzenia Narodowego i ministrem oświaty w rządzie Sténio Vincenta. 16 sierpnia 1946 został wybrany prezydentem przez Zgromadzenie Narodowe. Korzystając z pomocy amerykańskiej zainicjował szereg robót publicznych (między innymi budowę systemu zapór wodnych i kanałów w dolinie Artibonite). Dzięki zaciągnięciu pożyczki wewnętrznej spłacił zobowiązania zaciągnięte przez państwo w USA podczas okupacji Haiti przez wojska tego kraju. Jego rządy - początkowo charakteryzujące się daleko posuniętą liberalizacją życia politycznego - stopniowo traciły poparcie ludności. Przyczyniło się do tego między innymi ograniczenie praw związkowych i stłumienie serii strajków w latach 1948 - 1949. Krytycznie do Estimé nastawieni byli również wojskowi, którzy oskarżali go o sprzyjanie komunizmowi. Przez nich też został obalony (10 maja 1950). Zmarł w Paryżu, dokąd wyemigrował po utracie władzy.
