- The Day of the Vow (Afrikaans: Geloftedag) is a religious public holiday in South Africa. It is an important day for Afrikaners, originating from the Battle of Blood River on 16 December 1838, before which about 400 Voortrekkers made a promise to God that if he rescued them out of the hands of the approximately 20,000 Zulu warriors they were facing, they would honour that day as a holy day in remembrance of what God did for them. Initially called Dingane's Day (Afrikaans: Dingaansdag), 16 December was made an annual national holiday in 1910, before being renamed Day of the Vow in 1982. In 1994, after the end of Apartheid, it was officially replaced by the Day of Reconciliation, an annual holiday also on 16 December. However, many still celebrate it unofficially. (en)
- Geloftedag (español: día de la promesa; día del juramento) o Dingaansdag (español: día de Dingaan) es una fiesta pública religiosa celebrada el 16 de diciembre por los afrikáners en Sudáfrica. En ese día se conmemora la victoria de 470 voortrekkers contra un ejército de 15.000 guerreros zulúes en la batalla del Río Sangriento de 1838. El nombre Geloftedag se refiere a la promesa o el pacto (afrikáans: Die Gelofte) hecho a Dios por los voortrekkers antes de la batalla. Los voortrekkers prometieron que si Dios les ayudaba a ganar, ellos y sus descendientes honrarían ese día como un día santo. En cambio, el nombre de Dingaansdag se refiere a Dingane, el rey zulú del ejército derrotado. Dingaansdag fue declarado en 1910 como feriado público nacional por el parlamento de la Unión Sudafricana. En 1952, el Partido Nacional cambió el nombre de Dingaansdag por el de Geloftedag y lo decretó como feriado público religioso. Aunque oficialmente el nombre de Geloftedag fue reemplazado en 1995 por el de Versoeningsdag (día de la reconciliación); los afrikáneres siguen manteniendo la esencia tradicional del Geloftedag como día festivo afrikáner. Cette fête nationale et religieuse commémore la victoire des Boers contre les Zoulous durant le grand Trek. Le jour du vœu est très lié au nationalisme afrikaner, développé depuis le milieu du XIXe siècle, alors que le jour de la réconciliation vise à célébrer l'unité et la réconciliation entre les peuples sud-africains, autour du 16 décembre en tant que date commune significative pour les différents groupes ethniques du pays.
