- Developmental systems theory (DST) is an overarching theoretical perspective on biological development, heredity, and evolution. It emphasizes the shared contributions of genes, environment, and epigenetic factors on developmental processes. DST, unlike conventional scientific theories, is not directly used to help make predictions for testing experimental results; instead, it is seen as a collection of philosophical, psychological, and scientific models of development and evolution. As a whole, these models argue the inadequacy of the modern evolutionary synthesis on the roles of genes and natural selection as the principal explanation of living structures. - La teoría de los sistemas de desarrollo, más conocida por su forma abreviada DST (de sus siglas en inglés Developmental Systems Theory) es un conjunto de teorías en torno al desarrollo y la evolución orgánicas contrarias al . La DST tiene su origen en la psicología del desarrollo y del comportamiento, siendo aplicada a la biología por filósofos de la biología y biólogos moleculares. El texto clásico de la DST es el libro de The Ontogeny of Information (1985). En él, Oyama rechaza las visiones dicotómicas del desarrollo que dividen las causas ontogenéticas en genéticas y genéricas (fundamentalmente ambientales). Para Oyama, la información genética no reside ni en los genes ni en el ambiente, sino que emerge de la interacción entre recursos ontogenéticos diversos a todos los niveles (molecular, celular, orgánico, ecológico, social y biogeográfico). Frente a la concepción de la evolución como la transmisión de información genética entre generaciones, la DST subraya la construcción ontogenética de la información en cada generación a partir de recursos tanto genéticos como genéricos.
