- Defenders of the Earth is an American animated television series produced in 1986, featuring characters from three comic strips distributed by King Features Syndicate—Flash Gordon, The Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Mandrake's assistant Lothar—opposing Ming the Merciless in the year 2015. Supporting characters include their children Rick Gordon (son of Flash), L.J. (son of Lothar), Kshin (adopted son of Mandrake), and Jedda Walker (daughter of the Phantom). The show lasted for 65 episodes; there was also a short-lived comic book series published by Star Comics (an imprint of Marvel Comics). The closing credits credit Rob Walsh and Tony Pastor for the main title music, and Stan Lee for the lyrics. The series was later shown in reruns on the Sci Fi Channel as part of Sci Fi's animation block, Cartoon Quest. Flash Gordon has also been seen in two other animated series: The New Adventures of Flash Gordon (1979–82), and Flash Gordon (1996–97). (en)

En el año 2015, Ming el Despiadado, intenta conquistar la Tierra. Lo único que lo detiene en su objetivo es un equipo de superhéroes, entre ellos están Flash Gordon, The Phantom, Mandrake el mago, y Lothar. Además los acompañan Rich Gordon hijo de Flash Gordon, Jedda Walker, Kshin y L.J. Además de las mascotas Zuffy y Kisa. Estos 10 héroes se unirán para detener los Planes de Ming. La serie tiene 65 episodios. También se publicó un cómic editado por Marvel Comics. La historia comienza cuando Flash Gordon y su hijo escapan de Ming el Despiadado. Ming agotó todos los recursos naturales de su planeta natal Mongo y busca establecerse en la Tierra. La esposa de Flash (Dale Arden en el cómic de Marvel), es capturada por Ming, quien intenta lavarle el cerebro, pero ella resistió hasta morir. Cette série n'est pas à l'origine tirée d'un comics, contrairement à beaucoup de séries de super héros même si les héros existaient déjà avant. Au Québec, la série a été diffusée à partir du 3 octobre 1988 à Super Écran, et en France à partir du 28 février 1989 dans Youpi ! L'école est finie sur La Cinq. Personagens de apoio incluem seus filhos Rick Gordon (filho de Flash Gordon), Jedda Walker (filha do Fantasma), Kshin (filho adotivo de Mandrake), e o filho de Lothar, LJ. A série durou 65 episódios.Juntamente com estes havia a pantera Kisa de Jedda e o menino, filho adotivo de Mandrake, Kshin. Kshin tinha um mascote chamado Zuffy, um zufóide, uma espécie animal de Mongo trazida à Terra por Rick Gordon. Em Portugal este desenho foi emitido pela RTP. No Brasil, foi exibido no SBT durante os anos de 1987 e 1990, em programas como o Show Maravilha, e no extinto canal Locomotion (DirecTV). Alguns episódios da série também chegaram a ser lançados em VHS. (pt)
