- Wilmer Dean Chance (June 1, 1941 – October 11, 2015) was an American professional baseball player. A right-handed pitcher, he played in 11 Major League Baseball seasons for the Los Angeles / California Angels, Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets and Detroit Tigers. With a touch of wildness and the habit of never looking at home plate once he received the sign from his catcher, Chance would turn his back fully towards the hitter in mid-windup before spinning and unleashing a good fastball, sinker or sidearm curveball. In 1964, Chance became at the time the youngest pitcher to win the Cy Young Award when, as a member of the Los Angeles Angels, he led the American League in wins (20), innings pitched (2781⁄3) and earned run average (1.65—as of 2015, a franchise record) and was third in the A.L. in strikeouts. He pitched 11 shutouts (also a franchise record as of 2015) that season, winning five of those by a 1–0 score. At the time, only one Cy Young Award was given in all of MLB; since 1967, separate awards have been given in the AL and the National League. Chance's Cy Young Award was the third in a string of five consecutive Cy Young Awards won by a pitcher from a Los Angeles-based team. The others were won by Dodger pitchers: Don Drysdale in 1962 and Sandy Koufax in 1963, 1965, and 1966. (en)

Chance firma il suo primo contratto professionistico dopo le superiori con i Baltimore Orioles e passa i due anni successivi (1959-1960) a giocare nelle leghe minori. Nel dicembre 1960 viene selezionato dai Los Angeles Angels all'American League expansion draft. Dopo aver passato gran parte del 1961 al livello AAA, a fine stagione passa in Major League. La sua stagione da rookie nel 1962 è straordinaria, con una Media PGL (ERA) di 2.96, ma quella successiva non è altrettanto buona. Nel 1964 vince il Cy Young Award, ha la migliore ERA dell'American League e la sua squadra vince la lega. A fine del 1966 viene ceduto ai Minnesota Twins. Ai Twins però è protagonista di un'ottima stagione e il 6 agosto 1967 è protagonista di una partita perfetta, accorciata però a cinque inning per pioggia, contro i Boston Red Sox. Vince il premio . La sua carriera declina dopo il 1968 e nel 1970 passa ai Cleveland Indians; non finisce lì la stagione però: viene presto girato ai New York Mets. L'anno successivo è ai Detroit Tigers, con cui chiude la carriera la stagione stessa. Nelle sue 11 stagioni da professionista ha giocato 406 partite come pitcher, con un'ERA di 2.92. Era un notoriamente un debole battitore: ha una media in carriera di 0.066. Ha partecipato due volte all'American League All-Star Game. In tre stagioni ha superato i 200 strikeout.
