- Αγωνίσματα ανώμαλου δρόμου, ατομικό και ομαδικό, υπήρχαν στο ολυμπιακό πρόγραμμα του στίβου από την Ολυμπιάδα του 1912 στη Στοκχόλμη ως το 1924 στην Αμβέρσα. Αγώνισμα ομαδικού 4 μιλίων διεξήχθη και στην Ολυμπιάδα του 1904 στο Σεντ Λούις των ΗΠΑ με τη συμμετοχή αθλητικών συλλόγων και όχι χωρών αλλά από μερικούς ερευνητές θεωρείται ότι ήταν αγώνισμα σταδίου και όχι ανωμάλου δρόμου. Μετά το 1924 οι αγώνες ανωμάλου δρόμου αφαιρέθηκαν από το ολυμπιακό πρόγραμμα. Στα αγωνίσματα αυτά διακρίθηκαν ιδιαίτερα οι αθλητές της Φινλανδίας με πέντε χρυσά μετάλλια, δύο ασημένια κι ένα χάλκινο και της Σουηδίας με ένα χρυσό, δύο ασημένια κι ένα χάλκινο μετάλλιο. Πολυνίκης αθλητής του ανωμάλου δρόμου υπήρξε ο Φινλανδός Πάαβο Νούρμι με τέσσερα χρυσά σε δυο ολυμπιάδες (1920, 1924) (el)
- Cross country running at the Summer Olympics was held at the multi-sport event for men only from 1912 to 1924. During its brief tenure as an Olympic event, it featured on the Olympic athletics programme. Medals were awarded on an individual race basis as well as a national team points basis. Traditionally a winter sport, the scheduling of cross country within a summer event caused organisational issues. The sport was dropped after 1924 Olympics, when most of the runners dropped out due to extreme heat and pollution from a nearby power station. Over its three appearances at the Olympics, Finnish runners dominated the event. Tying in with the emergence of the Flying Finns, Hannes Kolehmainen won the inaugural event then Paavo Nurmi won the following two editions, winning gold medals both individually and in the team race. Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele and Paul Tergat, all highly successful African long-distance runners, jointly issued an open letter in 2008 to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge, urging him to consider the re-instatement of cross country as an Olympic sport. The International Association of Athletics Federations and athletics media have supported the idea of including the sport at the Winter Olympic Games. The IOC defines winter sports as those requiring snow or ice, presenting a possible block on its inclusion. Although the sport does not require such conditions, major cross country events have been held on snow on numerous occasions. (en)
- Le cross-country a fait partie du programme des Jeux olympiques d'été en 1912, 1920 et 1924, consistant en une épreuve individuelle et une épreuve par équipes. Les distances des courses individuelles étaient d'environ 12 000 m en 1912, d'environ 8 000 m en 1920 et d'environ 10 000 m en 1924. Le Finlandais Paavo Nurmi est l'athlète le plus titré en remportant quatre médailles d'or au total, dont deux à titre individuel. En 2020, World Athletics a demandé officiellement au Comité international olympique le retour de l'épreuve de cross-country au programme des Jeux olympiques d'été de 2024 à Paris, cent ans après la dernière épreuve, disputée également à Paris. La compétition prendrait la forme d'un relais mixte par équipes de 4 coureurs (deux hommes et deux femmes) disputé sur la distance de 20 kilomètres.
