- Crawford Priory ist die Ruine eines ehemaligen Herrenhauses in den schottischen Lowlands. Sie liegt fünf Kilometer südwestlich von Cupar unweit des Dorfes Springfield im Verwaltungsbezirk Fife. Ursprünglich wurde Crawford Priory 1758 vom 21. Earl of Crawford erbaut. Zwischen 1809 und 1811 erfolgte aber ein umfassender Um- und Ausbau, der das Aussehen des Gebäudes vollständig veränderte. 1809 beauftragte Lady Mary Lindsay Crawford zunächst den Architekten David Hamilton mit der Neugestaltung. 1811 wurde Hamilton durch James Gillespie Graham abgelöst. Sowohl Hamilton als auch Graham ließen das Herrenhaus im neugotischen Stil umbauen, wobei sich Graham noch stärker an den vom Kirchenbau bekannten Formen der Gotik orientierte als Hamilton. Im Jahr 1833 starb Lady Mary Lindsay Crawford und vererbte Crowford Priory an die Earls of Glasgow. 1871 ließ das damalige Oberhaupt der Familie, , den Bau an der Ostseite um eine Kapelle erweitern. Dessen Nachfolger, David Boyle, 7. Earl of Glasgow, verkaufte Crowford Priory schließlich aufgrund hoher Schulden an , der 1919 zum Baron Cochrane of Cults erhoben wurde. Dieser ließ 1920 den Eingangsbereich des Anwesens um eine Vorhalle erweitern. Wegen der enormen Unterhaltskosten schlossen die Cochrane of Cults in den nachfolgenden Jahrzehnten Teile des Gebäudes. Nach dem Tod des 2. Barons Cochrane of Cults, , im Jahr 1968 gaben sie Crowford Priory 1971 endgültig auf. Seitdem verfällt das Anwesen. Heute ist der Innenausbau fast vollständig zerstört, nur die Außenmauern sind in weiten Teilen erhalten geblieben. Die Ruine ist aufgrund von Sicherheitsvorschriften nicht öffentlich zugänglich. (de)
- Crawford Priory is an estate house about 2 miles south west of Cupar, Fife, based on private land with no single owner. It is a former residence of the Earls of Crawford, Earls of Glasgow and Barons Cochrane of Cults. It lies just outside the village of Springfield. Originally built as Crawford Lodge by the in 1758, it was substantially enlarged and extended in the early nineteenth century by a sister of the 22nd Earl, . Lady Mary engaged architects David Hamilton, and then James Gillespie Graham, to redesign the building in the gothic style, adding buttresses, turrets and pinnacles effecting the look of a priory, although it had had no religious history. Lady Mary's heirs, the Earls of Glasgow, further developed the house. In 1871 the 6th Earl of Glasgow built a chapel in the east front. However huge debts forced the 7th Earl to sell off all his estates in order to retain the family seat at Kelburn, near Largs. The house then passed to the politician Thomas Cochrane, son-in-law of the 6th Earl of Glasgow. An outlying estate at Priestfield was sold out of the family to the Martin (later Martin Smith Martin and Martin Smith) family at this time. Cochrane was created Baron Cochrane of Cults in 1919. Further remodelling was undertaken in the 1920s by Reginald Fairlie, including the removal of the porte cochere to the west front. After the death of the 2nd Baron in 1968 the house was closed, and gradually fell into disrepair and ruin. There are no significant remains of the internal gothic design save a cast iron balustrade in the D-shaped main stairhall in the east side of the building. (en)
