- Costache Caragiale (Romanian pronunciation: [kosˈtace karaˈd͡ʒjale]; 29 March 1815 – 13 February 1877) was a Romanian actor and theatre manager who had an important role in the development of the Romanian theatre. Born in Bucharest, Wallachia, he made his stage debut in 1835 and, in 1838, organized a theatre company in Iaşi, Moldavia, which became part of the first Romanian National Theatre. He worked in many Romanian regional theatres, especially in Iaşi, Craiova and Botoşani, and encouraged the usage of plays by Romanian dramatists of the day, especially those of Vasile Alecsandri and Constantin Negruzzi. Between 1852 and 1855, Costache Caragiale was the first director of the National Theatre of Bucharest. He also wrote a few comedies, such as O repetiţie moldovenească – A Moldavian Rehearsal (1844) and O soaré la mahala (A Soiree in the Neighbourhood). He is the uncle of Ion Luca Caragiale, a Romanian playwright. His younger brother, Iorgu Caragiale, was also an actor and theatre director. (en)

Il est l'oncle du dramaturge Ion Luca Caragiale. Costache Caragiale fut l'élève de . Il mit son art au service des idéaux progressistes, démocratiques lors de la Révolution de 1848. Il anima un mouvement théâtral à travers le pays et qu'il organisa dans les villes de Botoșani, Iași, Craiova et Bucarest. En 1852, il devint le premier directeur du tout nouveau théâtre national de Bucarest, créé sous le nom de "Teatrul cel Mare din București" («Grand Théâtre de Bucarest»). Le théâtre est devenu une institution nationale en 1864 par un décret du Premier ministre Mihail Kogălniceanu. En 1875, le théâtre fut officiellement désigné comme le Théâtre national, administré par le ministère roumain de la Culture. En 1877, George Stephănescu, professeur de chant et de musique à l'université nationale de musique de Bucarest, fut nommé directeur du Théâtre national de Bucarest à la suite du décès de Costache Caragiale.
