- Emerging Contaminants oder Emerging Pollutants (frei übersetzt: Auftauchende Schadstoffe) ist ein Sammelbegriff für verschiedene Substanzen und Substanzgruppen, deren Vorkommen in der Umwelt erst im Lauf der 1990er Jahre oder später entdeckt wurde. Es kann sich dabei um synthetische oder natürliche Substanzen handeln. Emerging Contaminants werden derzeit bei der Umweltüberwachung nicht standardmäßig erfasst. Sie können aber freigesetzt werden und, nachgewiesenermaßen oder möglicherweise, negative Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt oder die menschliche Gesundheit haben. Ein vergleichbares Prinzip zur Zusammenfassung neuerdings vermehrt auftretender Infektionskrankheiten wendet man in der Medizin mit den Emerging Infectious Diseases an. (de)
- Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) is a term used by water quality professionals to describe pollutants that have been detected in environmental monitoring samples, that may cause ecological or human health impacts, and typically are not regulated under current environmental laws. Sources of these pollutants include agriculture, urban runoff and ordinary household products (such as soaps and disinfectants) and pharmaceuticals that are disposed to sewage treatment plants and subsequently discharged to surface waters. Examples of emerging contaminants are 1,4-Dioxane, food additives, pharmaceuticals, and natural & synthetic hormones. CECs have the ability to enter the water cycle after being discharged as waste through the process of runoff making its way into rivers, directly through effluent discharge, or by the process of seepage and infiltration into the water table, eventually entering the public water supply system. Emerging contaminants are known to cause endocrine disrupting activity and other toxic mechanisms, some are recognized as known carcinogens by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). - L'expression contaminants « émergents » désigne un ensemble hétérogène de substances dont la présence dans l’environnement n’avait pas été décelée auparavant et dont l'étude et la surveillance sont relativement récentes. De façon générale, quand on parle "contaminants émergents" on fait en réalité souvent référence à des "contaminants d'intérêt émergent". La nuance étant que certains contaminants sont effectivement émergents et nouveaux mais que plusieurs contaminants considérés comme émergents sont en fait des problématiques émergentes pour des contaminants qui étaient là depuis longtemps . Par exemple, les traces d'hormones stéroidiennes sont maintenant détectées dans les eaux usées et même parfois dans l'eau potable mais si ce problème est "émergent", il y a une contamination d'hormones anthropique depuis que les humains font des villages près des cours d'eau. Des nouveaux produits, dont la toxicologie et l'écotoxicologie sont mal connues, sont périodiquement ajoutés à cette liste, par exemple le TCP. (fr)

* Sono presenti nell'ambiente in concentrazioni molto contenute (trace concentrations).

* Nel 2021, alcuni di questi composti non sono ancora stati inseriti sistematicamente in programmi di monitoraggio (a livello nazionale, europeo o mondiale), ma a partire dal primo decennio del ventunesimo secolo risultano menzionati il liste quali, ad esempio, quella delle sostanze medicinali ad alta priorità nel contesto dei farmaci aventi maggior impatto sul ciclo dell'acqua (high priority substances within relevant pharmaceuticals to the water cycle).
