A maioria desses comentários eram baseados na obra de Agostinho, por quem Cláudio tinha grande admiração. Cláudio tornou-se conhecido por suas pregações iconoclastas, em combate aos desvios da igreja medieval e pelos ensinos que prefiguravam aqueles da Reforma Protestante.
