It stands on the Cutzamala River, one of the main tributaries of the Balsas River, at a height of 230 metres (755 ft) above sea level. The 2010 population was reported to be 37,035 by the Congress of Guerrero. The city's name honours Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, a 19th-century president of the Supreme Court and writer born in Tixtla, Guerrero.

Se encuentra a 201 kilómetros de la Ciudad de México y forma parte de la región de Tierra Caliente de dicha entidad. Ciudad Altamirano es actualmente la décima ciudad más poblada del estado acumulando un total de 25,850 habitantes en 2020.​ Altamirano funciona como entronque de las carreteras federales y 51, que comunican en el estado a Cutzamala de Pinzón con Zihuatanejo e Iguala con Ciudad Altamirano, respectivamente.​ Se ubica junto al río Cutzamala, una de las principales afluentes del río Balsas, la cual sirve en esta región de frontera entre los estados de Guerrero y Michoacán, situándose esta ciudad en la porción fronteriza de los dos. Al erigirse el estado de Guerrero, Pungarabato no formaba parte de esta entidad, pues continuaba siendo del estado de Michoacán, sin embargo, existían problemas en cuanto la delimitación de los estados, que provocó la intervención del Gobierno federal. En 1907, por decreto del presidente de la República, Porfirio Díaz Mori, se corrigieron los límites de los estados de Guerrero y Michoacán, tomando como base el cauce del río Cutzamala, afluente del Balsas, que corre por el noroeste de la cabecera municipal de Pungarabato, pasando ésta y parte del área geográfica de este municipio a la jurisdicción de Guerrero.
