- Chauvigny (French pronunciation: [ʃoviɲi]; Poitevin: Chôvigni) is a commune in the Vienne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in western France. Chauvigny is located 20 miles (32 km) east of Poitiers by rail. The town is situated overlooking the river Vienne and a small brook. Chauvigny is twinned with Billericay in Essex, England. The composer Fernand Lamy (1881–1966) was born in Chauvigny. Chauvigny was among the places visited by Roger Fry the British artist, art critic and member of the Bloomsbury group in October 1911 when, after his visit to Paris to see the Salon d’Automne, he joined Clive Bell (husband of the celebrated English artist Vanessa Bell) and Duncan Grant (also a celebrated English artist) on a bicycle tour of the region to explore Romanesque churches. Al exterior destaca la torre de la interseccíón del crucero y los ábsides; el límpido y luminoso interior conserva un conjunto de capiteles esculpidos con temas bíblicos, dentro de un estilo muy característico; constituyen una de las obras maestras de la escultura románica francesa. Quatrième agglomération du département derrière Poitiers, Châtellerault et Loudun, Chauvigny doit l'essentiel de sa renommée à son important patrimoine médiéval. Juchés sur un promontoire rocheux commandant les vallées de la Vienne et du Talbat, pas moins de cinq châteaux forment un ensemble fortifié de premier plan, peu commun en Europe. Au cœur du centre historique, la collégiale Saint-Pierre (XIIe siècle), principale église de la ville, présente des sculptures caractéristiques de l'école poitevine, ainsi qu'un intérieur peint. Un peu à l'écart, l'église de Saint-Pierre-les-Églises (ancienne commune désormais rattachée à Chauvigny) conserve des fresques antérieures à l'an mil. Centre économique situé au cœur du département, à peu de distance de Poitiers, Chauvigny concentre essentiellement des activités secondaires et tertiaires (commerce, BTP, tourisme ; fabrication traditionnelle de porcelaine et extraction de pierre de taille).
