- Chaos and Disorder (englisch; „Chaos und Unordnung“) ist das 18. Studioalbum des US-amerikanischen Musikers Prince. Es erschien am 9. Juli 1996 bei dem Label Warner Bros. Records und ist das zweite Album, das er unter seinem unaussprechbaren Symbol als Pseudonym veröffentlichte; aufgrund von Differenzen mit Warner hatte er 1993 seinen Künstlernamen abgelegt. Das Album zählte zu dem laufenden Vertrag, den Prince im 1992 mit dem Major-Label für sechs weitere Alben bis zum 31. Dezember 1999 verlängert hatte. Die Musik zählt zum Genre Rockmusik, die Liedtexte handeln unter anderem von Liebe, Spiritualität und Wollust. Als Gaste wirken das Blechbläserquintett Hornheads und Sängerin Rosie Gaines mit. Bei der Covergestaltung des Albums nimmt Prince Bezug auf seinen damaligen Streit mit Warner Bros. Records. Weder er noch das Major-Label veranstalteten nennenswerte Werbung für Chaos and Disorder; es konnte international keinen Gold- oder Platinstatus erreichen. Musikkritiker bewerteten das Album sehr unterschiedlich; entweder wurde Chaos and Disorder zum Teil sehr gelobt oder zum Teil sehr negativ kritisiert. Eine Tournee zum Album spielte Prince nicht. The album reached number 26 in the United States - his poorest performance with an album of new material since his debut - and number 14 in the United Kingdom. Prince refused to promote the album, still engaged in his fight against his Warner Bros. contract, and it was released simply to fulfill his contractual obligations. The inlay sleeve carries the message: Originally intended 4 private use only, this compilation serves as the last original material recorded by (love symbol) 4 warner brothers records - may you live 2 see the dawn The single "Dinner with Delores" was released in the United Kingdom only, and despite the low-key promotion, became a Top 40 hit, albeit a minor one by his previous standards. Despite having been out of print for years, the album was released digitally on Tidal in 2016, and on iTunes in 2018. It was reissued on CD and vinyl in September 2019.
