Les fulles que surten de la part baixa de la tija són pinnatisectes o pinnatipartides la planta fa de 20 a 150 cm d'alçada i floreix de juny a agost. Els papus fan de 3 a 5 mm. Als Països Catalans es troba en pstures seques i camps de cereals en l'estatge montà i contrades del nord del Mediterrani principalment les sotmeses a climes de tendència continental. No es troba a les Balears. És una planta melífera. En medicina popular es feia servir com a vulnerària (contra els cops) i emol·lient. Aquesta planta es pot confondre amb Succisa pratensis, però en el gratabous les fulles estan disposades alternament i en S. pratensis ho són alternadament. (ca)
- Chrpa čekánek (Centaurea scabiosa) je vytrvalá, půl až jeden metr vysoká, planě rostoucí rostlina kvetoucí v druhé polovině léta růžovofialovými květy sestavenými do jednoho nebo několika úborů. Bylina je v české přírodě původním druhem a vyskytuje se na sušších stanovištích poměrně hojně. Centaurea scabiosa je komplex více než deseti taxonů, jejich přesné morfologie, počty chromozomů, genetické variace a fylogenetické vztahy nejsou dobře známé. Většina těchto blízkých a nespecifikovaných taxonů se vyskytuje v jižní Evropě a západní Asii. Druh rostoucí v České republice je považován za Centaurea scabiosa s. s., v podstatě za Centaurea scabiosa subsp. scabiosa. (cs)

- Centaurea scabiosa, or greater knapweed, is a perennial plant of the genus Centaurea. It is native to Europe and bears purple flower heads. Greater knapweed is found growing in dry grasslands, hedgerows and cliffs on lime-rich soil. Upright branched stems terminate in single thistle-like flowerheads, each having an outer ring of extended, purple-pink "ragged" bracts which form a crown around the central flowers. The plant has deeply dissected leaves which form a clump at the base. This species is very valuable to bees. It is also a magnet for many species of butterfly. Among them is the marbled white. This is the only known food plant for caterpillars of the Coleophoridae case-bearer moth Coleophora didymella. Centaurea scabiosa has been used in traditional herbal healing as either a vulnerary or an emollient. The plant is sometimes confused with devils-bit scabious, however the leaves on this plant are arranged alternately, whereas in devils-bit they are opposite. (en)

De lange, donkergroene bladeren zijn veerdelig tot dubbel veerspletig. De grote centaurie bloeit van juni tot oktober met roze tot roodpaarse, 1,5-2,5 cm grote, alleenstaande bloemen. De bloeiwijze is een hoofdje met buisbloempjes. Er is een krans van steriele, franjeachtige . De omwindselbladen zijn evenals die van de bergcentaurie (Centaurea monatana) franjeachtig ingesneden en hebben aan de top geen stekel. De vrucht is een nootje en heeft een mierenbroodje.
