Red Hat Enterprise Linux se compone de software libre y código abierto, pero se publica en formato binario usable (CD-ROM o DVD-ROM) solamente a suscriptores pagados. Como es requerido, Red Hat libera todo el código fuente del producto de forma pública bajo los términos de la Licencia pública general de GNU y otras licencias. Tous ses paquets, à l'exception du logo, sont des paquets compilés à partir des sources de la distribution Linux Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), éditée par la société Red Hat. Elle est donc quasiment identique et compatible. La RHEL en version binaire, directement installable et exploitable, ne peut être obtenue que par achat d'une licence d'utilisation auprès de Red Hat ou de ses revendeurs. La plupart des programmes inclus et livrés avec la Red Hat sont publiés sous licence GPL qui impose au redistributeur de fournir les sources. CentOS utilise donc les sources de la RHEL (accessibles librement sur Internet) pour regénérer la Red Hat à l'identique. Il faut savoir que RHEL est en grande partie basée sur Fedora, distribution communautaire issue de Red Hat. On peut donc considérer la CentOS comme une version gratuite de la Red Hat. Red Hat Enterprise Linux è composta interamente da software libero, ma è resa disponibile in una forma usabile (come CD-ROM di binari) solo a pagamento. Come richiesto dalla GNU General Public License e dalle altre licenze, tutto il codice sorgente è reso disponibile pubblicamente dalla Red Hat. Gli sviluppatori di CentOS usano questo codice per creare un prodotto molto simile a Red Hat Enterprise Linux rendendolo disponibile gratuitamente per il download e l'uso, senza però il supporto offerto da Red Hat. Sostanzialmente la differeneza tra Red Hat e CentOS risiede principalmente nell'assenza di assistenza (il vero/principale motivo per cui si paga), e il cambio del logo, dato che Red Hat è un trade mark. Altre differenze minime risiedono nella garanzia, dato che i binari vengono testati, e compilati in un certo modo(ognuno da al compilatore le opzioni che preferisce). Esistono anche altre distribuzioni derivate dal codice sorgente di Red Hat. Per scaricare e installare gli aggiornamenti, CentOS usa YUM, mentre Red Hat usa up2date.
