Jahrhundert wurde unter dem Bischof Zosimus der Umbau zur Kirche, zunächst im byzantinischen Stil, vorangetrieben. Nach den Umbauten und Erweiterungen der folgenden Jahrhunderte bietet die Kathedrale heute ein in dieser Form einzigartiges architektonisches Mischbild. Neben den immer noch als solche erkennbar gebliebenen Teilen des antiken Tempels sind Elemente der byzantinischen Baukunst, der normannischen Romanik und des sizilianischen Barocks in ihr vereint. Considerata la chiesa più importante della città di Siracusa, è entrata a far parte dei beni protetti dall'UNESCO in quanto patrimonio dell'umanità. Il suo stile è all'esterno principalmente barocco e rococò, mentre al suo interno alterna parti risalenti all'epoca siceliota, poiché appartenenti al tempio greco e parti risalenti all'epoca medievale, costruite dai Normanni e così lasciate fino ai giorni attuali. La sua struttura interna è composta in diverse navate e cappelle, le quali hanno uno stile classico e decorato, tipico del barocco anch'esso. Di grande significato religioso, custodisce statue, reliquie e spoglie di santi, martiri e nobili siracusani. I suoi arredi hanno visto il susseguirsi di artisti provenienti da più parti d'Italia e dall'estero. Da sempre simbolo della religiosità siracusana, la cattedrale attraversò le varie fasi storiche e culturali della città. (it)
