- Die Worshipful Company of Brewers ist eine der Livery Companies der City of London. Es ist bekannt, dass sich die Londoner Brauer im 13. Jahrhundert zusammengeschlossen haben. Ihre erste Royal Charta wurde von Heinrich VI. im Jahr 1438 erteilt. Im Jahr 1643 führte das Parlament Verbrauchssteuern auf Bier, Ale und Malz ein, die ständig erhöht wurden, bis Gin billiger wurde, was zum Anwachsen von Brauereien ohne Lizenz führte. 1685 dehnte James II. den Zuständigkeitsbereich der Gesellschaft auf acht Meilen um London und seine Vororte aus. Im Jahr 1739 nahm die Gesellschaft neue Statuten an, die u. a. vorsahen, dass die Mitglieder „bei der Gesellschaft eine Bürgschaft [...] für alle Kosten, die ihnen durch die Wahl zum Sheriff oder Lord Mayor entstehen, eingehen“. Um 1750 begann der Niedergang der Company. Sie sind die Treuhänder der Dame Alice Owen Foundation, die die unterstützt. Die Brewers’ Company steht an 14. Stelle in der Rangfolge der Livery Companies. Das Motto der Gesellschaft lautet In God Is All Our Trust (In Gott liegt all unser Vertrauen). Die heutige Brewer’s Hall wurde 1960 erbaut, nachdem das vorherige Gebäude bei einem Bombenangriff im Jahr 1940 zerstört worden war. Die erste Halle der Gesellschaft wurde 1666 beim Großen Brand von London zerstört. Die am Aldermanbury Square gelegene Halle kann heute für Veranstaltungen privat gemietet werden. (de)
- The Worshipful Company of Brewers is one of the livery companies of the City of London. London brewers are known to have organised as a group in the 13th century. Their first royal charter was granted by Henry VI in 1438. In 1643, Parliament imposed excise taxes on beer, ale, and malt, steadily increasing them until gin became cheaper, causing the growth of unlicensed breweries and, in 1685, James II extended the company's jurisdiction to eight miles around London and its suburbs. In 1739 it adopted new by-laws, which included the requirement for members to "enter into a bond [...] with the company against any expenses of their being elected to the office of sheriff or lord mayor". The company started to go into decline about 1750. They are the trustees of the Dame Alice Owen Foundation, which supports Dame Alice Owen's School. The Brewers' Company ranks 14th in the order of precedence of Livery Companies. The company's motto is In God Is All Our Trust. The current Brewer's Hall was built in 1960, after bombing in 1940 destroyed the previous building. The company's first hall was destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666.Located in Aldermanbury Square the hall is now available on a private hire basis for events. (en)
