- The Blackburn B.48 Firecrest, given the SBAC designation YA.1, was a single-engine naval strike fighter built by Blackburn Aircraft for service with the British Fleet Air Arm during the Second World War. It was a development of the troubled Firebrand, designed to Air Ministry Specification S.28/43, for an improved aircraft more suited to carrier operations. Three prototypes were ordered with the company designation of B-48 and the informal name of "Firecrest", but only two of them actually flew. The development of the aircraft was prolonged by significant design changes and slow deliveries of components, but the determination by the Ministry of Supply in 1946 that the airframe did not meet the requirements for a strike fighter doomed the aircraft. Construction of two of the prototypes was continued to gain flight-test data and the third was allocated to strength testing. The two flying aircraft were sold back to Blackburn in 1950 for disposal and the other aircraft survived until 1952. (en)

Le développement de l'appareil fut ralenti par des modifications de conception significatives et des livraisons de composants trop lentes, mais ce fut le (en) (MoS), en 1946, qui porta le coup de grâce à l'appareil en déterminant qu'il ne répondait pas aux attentes en matière de chasseur d'attaque. Malgré une motorisation à la puissance impressionnante, il n'était pas particulièrement plus performant que d'autres avions contemporains, et son arrivée dans le paysage aéronautique à une époque où les moteurs à réaction commençaient déjà à rendre obsolètes les moteurs à pistons, joua contre lui. La construction de deux des prototypes fut achevée afin de récolter des données lors de vols d'essais, tandis que le troisième fut affecté à des tests de résistance structurelle au sol. Les deux appareils volants furent revendus à leur constructeur en 1950 pour être envoyés à la destruction. L'autre appareil survécut un peu plus longtemps, jusqu'en 1953. O desenvolvimento desta aeronave foi sucessivamente prolongado devido a alterações de design e um demorado fornecimento de componentes, porém, a determinação do Ministério do Abastecimento, em 1946, que a fuselagem não alcançava os requisitos de um caça, acabou por cancelar o projecto. A construção dos três protótipos continuou para serem usados em testes. Os dois exemplares foram vendidos de volta à Blackburn em 1950 e a terceira aeronave, juntamente com as restantes, foi transformada em sucata em 1952. (pt)
