- The Battle of Centuripe was fought from 2 to 4 August 1943, as part of the Allied invasion of Sicily during World War II. The 78th Battleaxe Division, of the British Eighth Army, was engaged in fierce fighting around the town of Centuripe in the central portion of Sicily in the hill country between the Rivers Dittaìno and Salso. Centuripe, a hill town set on a very high rocky pinnacle and approached by only one steep and twisty road, itself was the key to the whole Adrano position, the capture of which would in turn force the Germans to withdraw to new positions. The British troops captured the town after heavy fighting and as a result caused the Germans to start contemplating abandoning Sicily altogether. (en)

Les forces de la VIIIe armée britannique sont engagées dans de violents combats dans et autour de la ville de Centuripe dans la partie centrale de la Sicile dans la région montagneuse située entre les fleuves Dittaino et Salso. Elle aboutit au début de retrait des forces de l'Axe de Sicile. La Wehrmacht avait fortifié la ville située sur un piton rocheux très élevé et accessible par une seule route sinueuse. Centuripe, défendue par la 1re division Fallschirm-Panzer Hermann Göring, est une position défensive-clé de l'ensemble des forces de l'Axe et sa chute signifierait également la perte d'Adrano qui pousserait les Allemands à se retirer de leurs positions. - La battaglia di Centuripe fu combattuta dal 2 al 4 agosto 1943, nel corso dell'invasione alleata della Sicilia durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Le forze dell'VIII armata britannica ingaggiarono aspri combattimenti contro le truppe dell'Asse attestate a Centuripe nella parte centrale della Sicilia, tra i fiumi Dittaino e Salso, che in virtù della sua posizione su una rocca a circa 750 m s.l.m., raggiungibile solo mediante una strada tortuosa e ripida, era diventata un caposaldo fortificato delle truppe della Wehrmacht. La presa di Centuripe divenne dunque necessaria premessa per la conquista di Adrano, a sua volta importante obiettivo se si voleva costringere i tedeschi ad arretrare su nuove posizioni. Le truppe inglesi espugnarono la cittadina a prezzo di asperrimi combattimenti; la sua caduta fu uno dei fattori che convinsero i tedeschi dell'opportunità di abbandonare la Sicilia. La battaglia si inquadra nell'ambito dell'operazione Hardgate che prevedeva lo sfondamento delle difese tedesche lungo la linea Catenanuova-Centuripe-Adrano. (it)
